Playing twice last week, the Borgia volleyball Knights fell to O’Fallon Christian, 26-24, 25-23, and to Seckman, 25-21, 25-16.

The Knights are back in action Tuesday with a 5 p.m. home match against O’Fallon Christian.

The Tuesday contest is a rematch of Borgia’s closest run for a victory so far this season.

The Knights stay at home Thursday to host Bayless at 5 p.m.

The match against Christian Tuesday was a rescheduled match from early in the season.

Borgia Head Coach John Nieder indicated Borgia had a golden opportunity to earn its first victory of the season against O’Fallon Christian.

“In our match against O’Fallon Christian, we really didn’t play very good all-around as a team,” Nieder said. “We had eight service errors, 13 hitting errors, and 14 digging errors.”

Nieder had praise for some of the players.

“Jacob Maune did have an exceptional game recording eight kills and five solo blocks, most of them coming in the second match,” Nieder said.

But overall, mistakes plagued the Knights and they weren’t able to finish out either game.

“We struggled terminating plays on the outsides and eventually stopped setting them thus making us very predictable and their blocks just focused on our middle attacks,” Nieder said.

Korey Fumagalli recorded four kills while Alex Blechle had three in the match.

Fumagalli had two blocks. Blechle recorded eight assists while Po-Chun Huang added seven.

Fumagalli led the way in digs with seven. Brendan Joyce and Maune posted six each. Nathan Bargen and Blechle each added five. Jimmy Pak ended with four while Joey Howell, Huang and Jacob Simily had three digs apiece.

Blechle served an ace.

Nieder said the Knights faced a huge challenge against Seckman Thursday.

“This is one of those games where we knew we were outmatched, but the kids really played with confidence and we gave them a good run,” Nieder said.

Nieder reported Seckman fielded a lineup which included 6-8, 6-6, and 6-4 attackers.

“Going into this match with Seckman we knew we were going to face our toughest challenge yet this season,” Nieder said. “They were all very good offensive players.”

Nieder said the Knights switched the lineup. Pak moved from rightside to outside hitter. Joyce and Bargen moved into defensive roles.

“Even though we didn’t get a win, I was very proud of our teams overall performance,” Nieder said. “Offensively Jacob Maune and Korey Fumagalli did a great job terminating play against a much larger team. Alex Blechle and Jimmy Pak both added some key kills on outside as well. Nathan Bargen and Brendan Joyce both rose to the occasion defensively. Po-Chun Huang and Alex Blechle ran the offense picture perfect.”

Maune led the way with seven kills while Fumagalli posted six. Blechle and Pak had three kills apiece. Joyce had one kill.

Blechle recorded 10 assists while Huang added nine.

Maune posted 10 digs. Fumagalli added eight, Joyce ended with seven, Blechle and Pak posted six apiece and Bargen and Huang each had four digs.

Joyce served the team’s only ace.
