For the first time this season, a reigning Missourian Area Poll No. 1 team won.

Sullivan (3-2, 3-0) continued its domination of Four Rivers Conference opponents Friday with a 49-9 win over Pacific (1-4, 0-3).

Sullivan damaged Pacific with the big play on Friday, scoring six touchdowns in the first half to win 49-9 and extend the team’s winning streak to three games.

Sullivan’s defense, gashed by Union and St. Clair in consecutive weeks, neutralized Pacific’s offense. They added two more interceptions and sacked Pacific quarterback Lucas Zurliene four times in the first half. Pacific gained just 97 yards of offense.

Pacific scored first, getting a 62-yard punt return by Chris Klenke. The extra point failed.

Sullivan responded with Justin Biermann shredding the Indians on an option-keeper on the first play of the next series. Biermann glided through Pacific for a 65-yard touchdown run 17 seconds after Klenke’s score, and Jake Lochner’s extra point gave Sullivan a 7-6 lead.

Biermann totaled over 250 yards of offense, with 208 coming on the ground. He carried the ball just eight times.

On the next drive, Biermann ran 41 yards on the first play, which set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Caden Weigl. Dylan Harmon’s 3-yard touchdown run with 1:43 remaining in the first quarter helped Sullivan to a 21-6 lead. Pacific would chip into it on a 34-yard field goal by Mitchell Broam, only to see the Eagles respond with another one-play scoring drive, this time on a busted play. Biermann struggled with the snap, picked up the ball, headed toward the sideline and sprinted 55 yards for a touchdown with 8:28 left in the half.

A run-first offense, Sullivan deviated with some passes against Pacific, notably a 35-yard strike from Biermann to Matt McGowan on the Eagles next drive. McGowan hauled in the catch despite getting double coverage from the Pacific secondary. Sullivan went up 35-9.

Biermann threw an interception on Sullivan’s next series, but the Eagles returned the favor with Nathan Johnson nabbing Zurliene’s pass and streaking 65 yards for a touchdown. Sullivan took a 42-9 lead into the half.

Devin Harris’s 19-yard score capped off the final series for Sullivan’s first stringers with 9:46 in the third quarter. That set up a running clock, which Pacific would find themselves unable to stop.

Sullivan hosts Hermann for Homecoming in Week 6. Pacific plays at Owensville.
