Venturing into St. Louis Saturday, the Borgia basketball Knights opened 2014 with a 72-38 win over McCluer South-Berkeley at the Cardinal Ritter Classic.

Borgia (6-2, 2-1) had little trouble with the winless Bulldogs (0-5) in the contest.

After one quarter, Borgia grabbed a 22-12 lead. It was 36-20 at the half and 53-32 after three quarters.

Borgia concluded the contest with a 19-8 fourth quarter.

“Actually, we played really well as a team,” Borgia Head Coach Dave Neier said. “We had good passing and got some easy shots. That really helped our offense get going.”

Senior Adam Meyer led the Knights with 20 points, including going 10-11 from the field. He added two steals, one assist and one rebound.

Senior Joe Helfrich scored 16 points with four assists, two rebounds and two steals.

“Adam and Joe did a lot of damage inside,” Neier said. “They helped each other. They did a phenomenal job and had great shooting percentages.”

Sophomore Walton Eckelkamp hit double digits with 12 points, all from beyond the three-point arc He also had two assists, two rebounds and two steals.

“Walt hit some big outside shots for us,” Neier said.

Senior Zac Schweissguth was the fourth Borgia player to reach double digits, ending with 10 points. He also had six steals, five assists and one rebound.

“Zac was able to take the ball to the basket at times,” Neier said.

Senior Tyler Breckenkamp hit two three-point baskets for his six points.

Senior Kevin Birk recorded four points to go with eight assists, five steals and three rebounds.

“Kevin always does a great job,” Neier said. “The stuff he does for us doesn’t always show up in the stats. He does a great job running the defense. He had a great game.”

Junior Spencer Juergens scored two points with one rebound and one steal.

Junior Clayton Voss scored two points with one assist.

Sophomore Trey Hunter made his debut with three rebounds and one steal.

“It was nice to get Trey back,” Neier said. “It was good to get him out on the floor for some minutes.”

Junior Jake Neier added one assist and one steal.

Jordan Cole led Berkeley with 12 points, going 6-9 from the field. He also had four rebounds.

Trevon Parks netted 11 points to go with four rebounds.

Other Berkeley scorers were Berlin Robertson with seven points, Dion Fox with six and Christale Hughes-Dillon with two points.

Borgia’s Monday home game against St. Charles West was postponed due to weather. It has not been rescheduled yet.

Borgia is scheduled to host St. Mary’s in an Archdiocesan Athletic Association Large Division game Friday. It’s a tripleheader starting at 4 p.m. The varsity game is expected to start around 6:45 p.m.

The Dragons were 4-4 heading into a Tuesday game against McKinley. Friday’s game will be the AAA Large Division opener for St. Mary’s.

The Dragons have beaten Hancock, Alton Marquette, Priory and Cleveland. Losses have been to Affton, Lutheran South, SLUH and Francis Howell.

Standout Josh Robinson returns for the team and the 6-3 senior guard averages 32.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.4 steals, 1.3 assists and 0.4 of a blocked shot per game.

However, St. Mary’s has a strong supplemental scorer in Patrick Hubert, who averages 22 points per game in the two games he’s played so far.

“They’ve got two guys who have scored quite a bit,” Neier said. “Robinson is a pretty phenomenal scorer. He’s signed with Austin Peay.”

Borgia managed to corral Robinson last year, but his shadow, John Baumstark, has graduated.

“Last year, we put John Baumstark on him and he did a real good job,” Neier said. “We are looking for someone to step into that role this year.”
