For the second year in a row, the season ended for the Borgia wrestling program at the district level.

With three wrestlers, the Knights competed in the Class 2 District 1 Tournament Feb. 8-9 in Ste. Genevieve.

“Each wrestler made great improvements this year,” Borgia Head Coach Brad Jacquin said. “The season may have not ended with any state qualifiers, but we are judging success by self-improvement and all are wrestlers worked very diligently toward self-improvement and succeeded, therefore, we are happy with the season outcome.”

Jacquin indicated that the school’s second season in the sport has marked a step forward.

“We are going to reflect, regroup, and continue to move forward by seeking out opportunities in the offseason to continue to improve individually and improve the program,” Jacquin said.

Borgia was able to move its practices onto campus this season, but struggled to gain wrestlers. Jacquin was not hired as the head coach until after practices already had started.

With a staff in place, Jacquin hopes to be able to do a more thorough job of recruiting among the Borgia students prior to next season.

At the district meet, Borgia placed 14th in the team standings with four points.

Ste. Genevieve won the title with 247 points.

Dexter was a distant second at 143.5 points. St. Clair took third at 130.5 while Sullivan ended fourth at 117.5.

Following in the team standings were Park Hills Central (106), Sumner (96), Affton (83), Cape Notre Dame (78), Vashon (40), Lutheran South (34), Miller Career Academy (31), Roosevelt (22), Soldan (21), Borgia and Potosi (0).

All four team points were scored by Billy Rombach (182).

Rombach opened the meet by pinning Miller Career Academy’s Fred Wallace in 3:59.

In the quarterfinals, Logan Quertermous of Dexter pinned Rombach in 54 seconds. He received a bye in the consolation bracket, but lost to Joshua Jett of Lutheran South in 1:32 to end his season at 7-15.

Borgia’s other two wrestlers competing in the district meet were Dylan Voss (145) and Hunter Warmack (170).

Voss did not have a first-round opponent, but went right into the quarterfinals. There, he was pinned by Park Hills Central’s Kyle Schwantner in 43 seconds.

In the consolation bracket, James McGregory of Sumner pinned Voss in 1:43.

Voss finished the season at 4-15.

Warmack, who ended with 11 wins on the season (11-18) lost to Alexander Crooks of Sullivan in the first round in 1:05.

Moving into the second round of the wrestlebacks, Warmack was pinned by Miller Career Academy’s Michael Watson in 2:46.
