Washington returned to the win column with a GAC Central girls basketball victory Tuesday night.
The Lady Jays (9-7, 3-1) pulled ahead in the second quarter and never looked back in a 52-36 home victory over Holt (7-9, 1-2).
“It was a much better shooting night for us as a team,” said Washington Head Coach Adam Fischer. “Overall, this was a great team win with many contributions from all of the girls who stepped on the floor.”
Leading the way for Washington was Paige Carpenter, who made four three-pointers and finished with 18 points, three rebounds and two steals.
“Paige had four three-pointers in the first half, three of them came on consecutive possessions when we were trailing by four points at the time,” Fischer said.
Courtney Kedroski finished the game with 10 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Kirstie Leslie collected nine points, seven rebounds and two steals.
“Kirstie got herself going on the inside with some good strong moves to the basket, which allowed her to get to the free-throw line when she didn’t score,” Fischer said.
Megan Bauche pitched in with seven points, five steals and four rebounds.
“Alex Ready did an excellent job penetrating to the basket and when she found Megan Bauche on the outside, Megan was knocking the shots down,” Fischer said.
Helena Ballmann added four points and three rebounds.
Kaitlin Evans had two points and four rebounds.
Rachel Kackley had two points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists.
Fischer praised the performance of Washington’s bench players.
“We were able to control the boards and rebound well all night,” Fischer said. “When we were struggling, our bench came in and did a great job of handling the ball and knocking down some shots when they were open.”
Washington currently stands in second place in the GAC Central behind Ft. Zumwalt South (3-0).
The Lady Jays’ one conference loss came at Ft. Zumwalt South. The two teams meet again in Washington Feb. 12.
