Matches went about as expected Monday at the Class 3 District 8 volleyball tournament in Union.

All three of the higher seeds who played won. And only one match went to three games with it being the contest between the fourth and fifth seeds.

Monday results were:

• (4) Sullivan defeated (5) St. Clair, 25-21, 17-25, 25-17;

• (2) Owensville defeated (7) Salem, 25-14, 25-12; and

• (3) Union defeated (6) St. James, 25-20, 25-15.

The tournament concludes Tuesday night (after The Missourian went to press) with three matches:

• (1) Borgia (26-3-1) vs. Sullivan at 5 p.m.;

• Owensville vs. Union at 6:15 p.m.; and

• Championship match at 7:30 p.m.

Sullivan-St. Clair

Sullivan moved on with a victory in three games over St. Clair.

“While this game was certainly not our best performance of the year, we were very happy to get the first round win against St. Clair,” Sullivan Head Coach Sarah Rochleau said. “After winning the first set, we came out very sluggish in the second and lost 25-17. We knew we had to serve and attack more aggressively in the third set to win the match, and the girls were able to deliver.”

Rochleau said her team is looking forward to playing Borgia.

“It was a fun match, but a frustrating one to lose,” said St. Clair Head Coach Ashley Mims. “We played a great second game, but just ran out of gas.”

The second game was the highlight for the Lady Bulldogs.

“We hit the ball great in the second game. We did a good job moving and talking,” Mims said. “We picked up balls we haven’t picked up all season.”

Victoria Dace led Sullivan (12-11-6) with 11 kills. Taylor Lucas added nine while Skyler Evans posted eight and Sarah Weiland added six.

Evans had three blocks and Lucas added two.

Demi Armstrong recorded 33 assists.

“Senior setter Demi Armstrong was key to our offense,” Rochleau said.

Autumn Schatz and Dana Schatz each served two aces.

Sam Deason finished the match with nine kills and one ace for St. Clair (10-17-2).

“Sam hit well in the first two games,” Mims said.

Allison Hinson collected 10 digs, four kills and two blocks.

“That kid does it all,” Mims said of Hinson.

Macy Levvintre added four kills and three aces.

“Macy played really hard, especially in the second game,” Mims said.

Miranda Murphy finished with nine assists. Kelsey Wachter added six assists. Abby Ruck had four assists and one block.

Hannah Krouper registered three digs. Halley Cokley had one block.

“I’m proud of our team. We had 10 wins, which is good for us. We were a fairly young team,” Mims said. “We’ll start working toward next season. We lose three good seniors, but we have talent coming back. We have to find another hitter to replace Sam and Macy. We’re turning things around. It’s just going to take a while.”

St. Clair’s seniors are Kelsey Duncan, Deason and Levvintre.

Union-St. James

The old adage is that it’s tough to beat a team three times in a season, but that’s exactly what the Union Lady ’Cats (14-12-1) did against St. James (1-20-4).

“I am very happy we played well last night,” Union Head Coach Angie Morris said.

Morris credited sophomore Taylor Gaebe with sparking the offense.

“Taylor Gaebe was the star of the game,” Morris said. “She had eight kills and they were all in the first set. Lizzy Birkmann also was on fire last night and earned five kills.”

Union has featured aggressive serving again this season.

“Maddy Weinhold and Kaitlin Voss were aggressive with their serves and that helped gain the lead when we needed it most. Overall we played well and once we began to communicate and play our game, we pulled ahead and won.

Owensville (18-14) rolled past Salem (2-27) in the middle quarterfinal match. Additional information was not available as of press time.
