Rallying from an early deficit, the Washington Post 218 Junior Legion team rolled to victory Saturday in the winners’ bracket final of the Zone 1 Tournament against Jefferson City, 8-2.

“It definitely was a great day,” said Post 218 Manager Phillip Kleekamp. “All three facets of our game were there.”

Post 218 (28-2) advanced to the championship game with the victory while Jefferson City fell into the losers’ bracket.

Post 5 actually scored first in the game, putting a run on the board in the top of the second inning.

Washington came back to score four times in the bottom of the third and then added another run in the fourth.

Jefferson City scored in the top of the fifth, but Post 218 added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the victory.

Post 218 got a complete game from Aaron Meyer on the mound. He scattered 10 hits while giving up two runs. He did not walk a single batter while striking out five.

“We got another outstanding starting pitching performance,” Kleekamp said. “It’s just been ridiculous how good our starting pitching has been over the past two weeks.”

Offensively, Post 218 received eight hits with six different layers contributing those.

Seth Bollmann and Meyer each had two hits.

Bollmann also scored twice, drove in two, stole a base and added a sacrifice.

Meyer posted a double, drove in two and added two sacrifices.

Ross Seitter recorded a triple, driving home three runs. He also scored and sacrificed.

Seitter’s triple came in the third inning with the bases loaded and put Post 218 on top to stay.

Justin Baylard singled, scored twice and stole two bases.

Nathaniel Hillermann and Ryan Becszlko each had one hit. Hillermann also walked and stole a base.

Nick Thiel was hit by a pitch, sacrificed and scored a run.

John Himmelberg was hit by a pitch, stole a base, sacrificed and scored two runs.

“The defense was great today,” Kleekamp said. “We made some big plays early on. Even late, when they were threatening, we made some huge plays. Ross chased down a fly ball that was incredible. We had a double play, too. We went from them having runners on first and second with nobody out to keeping them off the board.”

For Post 5, Sam Bowles took the loss. He went 5.1 innings while allowing eight runs (four earned) on eight hits and one walk. He struck out two.

Burke Brant closed out the game, getting the final two outs. He walked one and struck out one.

Offensively, Jefferson City had 10 hits in the game. Cody Stegeman and Logan Vogel each had two hits for Post 5.

Stegeman tripled to lead off the game, but Washington escaped the jam with no damage.

“Aaron did a great job to pitch out of that,” Kleekamp said. “The defense backed him up. Jefferson City is a good hitting team. The big thing is that Aaron didn’t walk anybody. When you force a team to get three hits in a row to score, you’re going to have success.”

Zach Hudspeth doubled while Brant, James Renkemeyer, Matt Temmen and Alex Dickneite singled.
