For the fourth year in a row, East Central College has claimed the Harold Oetting Award for having the highest athletic GPA in the Midwest Community College Athletic Conference.
The three East Central College teams (men’s soccer, volleyball and softball) posted a 2.94 combined GPA to edge out Three Rivers Community College and Jefferson College.
Three Rivers of Poplar Bluff ranked second in the final standings with a 2.89 GPA. Jefferson College was third at 2.87.
Individual awards were not available.
The college also announced the hiring of current soccer Head Coach Kean Barclay as the new full-time on-campus coach.
Barclay, who enters his second season as ECC soccer head coach, now has the title of head coach and fitness specialist. He starts in his new position Aug. 1.
Barclay came to ECC in March of 2012, replacing Bobby Peters in that role.
Barclay most recently was a recruitment specialist at Radiant Research.
Barclay worked with the Northwest Arkansas Lightning as a club academy skills instructor and coach with the U-14 and U-15 programs. He also worked as a member of the Olympic Development Program staff in Arkansas.
Barclay played for Oakton Community College, Des Plaines, Ill., and then went on to the University of Abertay in Dundee, Scotland. While in Scotland, he helped his team reach the semifinals of the European University Soccer Tournament in 2003.
After that, he played in the Scottish Junior Football Association (similar to English nonleague) with Carnoustie Panmure FC and Lochore Welfare FC.
Barclay holds a national diploma in sport, health and exercise from Abertay University and a bachelor’s degree in physical education with an emphasis in sport management from Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI).
