Sullivan 35, St. Clair 21

Sullivan took a giant step in the Four Rivers Conference football race with a 35-21 home win Friday over St. Clair in  a battle between the two remaining unbeaten teams in the area.

The victory also gives the Eagles an advantage in the Class 4 District 3 standings.

The Eagles (4-0, 2-0) came out flying, holding leads of 6-0 after one quarter, 28-7 at halftime and 35-7 after three quarters.

St. Clair (3-1, 1-1) made things interesting with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Sullivan had its double wing offense going, executing throughout the contest and taking advantage of some missed tackles by the Bulldogs.

St. Clair’s offense never got anything going consistently.

The Eagles scored on their first possession on a 46-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Adam Tiefenbrunn to Adam Weiland to make the score 6-0 with 7:51 left in the first quarter.

The score jumped to 12-0 with 10:58 remaining in the second quarter when Caden Weigl ran nine yards for a touchdown.

The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard when quarterback Kyle Juergens tossed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Adam Brott to make the score 12-7 with 9:20 left in the second quarter.

But Sullivan answered by scoring on its next two possessions, a three-yard touchdown run by Tiefenbrunn and a 13-yard touchdown run by Justin Biermann.

The Eagles converted on both two-point conversions to make the score 28-7 at halftime.

The lone touchdown of the third quarter came on a one-yard touchdown run by Tiefenbrunn to increase the lead to 35-7.

St. Clair got things going in the fourth quarter.

Josh Martin scored on a 25-yard touchdown run with 8:45 left on the clock and Juergens and Evan Powell connected for a 51-yard touchdown pass to make the score 35-21 with 6:21 remaining.

The Bulldogs then got the ball back, but Sullivan secured the win on an interception by David Stack.

St. Clair visits Union in week five Friday at 7 p.m. Sullivan hosts Pacific Friday at 7 p.m.
