Virtudazo Competes

Normally, rain isn’t a bad thing at a swim meet.

But Monday’s Gateway Swimming and Diving Conference Janet Evans Division opener in Pacific was called after the 44th event Monday with Lake of the Woods earning a 176-130 victory over the host squad.

“Our swimmers did a great job being tough through the weather, I know they were all cold from the constant rain and wind,” Pacific Head Coach Hart Hillhouse said. “After seeing some of our swimmers and knowing that a few of my returning swimmers were not able to be at the first meet, I am extremely excited for the season and look forward to seeing continued progress. Lake of the Woods was very cooperative under the circumstances. They are a great group of swimmers, coaches, and reps.”

Pacific representative Angela Virtudazo reported the meet was called due to the rain. While there was no lightning, the rain was heavy at times and made things difficult for organizers and fans. The cool temperatures made it tough on the swimmers.

In the end, things started to get mixed up, Virtudazo said, and the meet ended early.

Pacific returns to action next Monday at Union. That event is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

Monday’s season opener started with paddleboarders, but scoring opened with the individual medley races.

Pacific’s winners were Ian Cox, Elizabeth Wamsley, Matthew Wamsley, Livi Lindemann and Nick Wamsley.

Placing second for Pacific were Ryan Sauvage and Lexi Delmain.

Taking third for Pacific were Hannah Uffman and Lizi Delmain.

Next up was the freestyle event and scoring points for wins were Pacific swimmers James Wamsley, Dan Wamsley, Ian Cox, Elizabeth Wamsley, Adam Van Winkle and Lexi Delmain.

The breaststroke races followed. Pacific’s winners who scored team points were James Wamsley, Dan Wamsley, Elizabeth Wamsley, Livi Lindemann and Nick Wamsley.

In the freestyle relay races, which ended the meet due to the rain, Pacific’s winners were the girls 7-8 team, boys 7-8 team, girls 13-14 team and boys 13-14 team.

Virtudazo mentioned some of the relay teams were getting mixed up due to the rain and some confusion with it being the first meet.
