After splitting with Carl Junction to start MSHSAA Class 3 volleyball pool play Friday in Cape Girardeau, the Borgia Lady Knights knew they had no margin of error.
Borgia responded by winning its second pool match over St. Pius X of Kansas City, 25-18, 25-9.
“At that time, a lot of people were splitting,” Borgia Head Coach Brad Bruns said. “We knew we had to win out in order to secure ourselves a chance to play in the final match. The girls pulled together. They talked about their commitments and their team promises we did earlier in the season, and they delivered. That’s what we needed to do.”
The sweep gave Borgia a 3-1 record in pool play at that time while St. Pius and Carl Junction were 2-2 and Lutheran South was 1-3. Carl Junction and Lutheran South split in the second round of pool play.
Borgia hit .286 as a team in the match while holding St. Pius to more errors than kills (-.036 percentage).
Freshman Audrey Arand again led Borgia in kills with eight while hitting .278 for the match.
Senior Sarah Geatley was unstoppable with six kills and no errors while hitting .462.
Sophomore Emma Kriete posted five kills while senior Janie Arand posted four kills and no errors on four chances.
Senior Erin Hillerman had three kills and no errors on five attempts.
Junior Jordan Kriete added two kills.
Janie Arand recorded 23 assists and Emma Kriete added one.
Emma Kriete had a huge match at the service line, registering four aces.
Three players, Audrey Arand, junior Alivia Brinker and Jordan Kriete each had five digs.
Emma Kriete ended with four digs while Audrey Arand, Janie Arand and sophomore Molly Arand had two digs apiece.
Geatley and Hillerman posted one dig apiece.
Geatley and Jordan Kriete each recorded one solo block. Janie Arand and Hillerman had one block assist apiece.
Kathryn Cahill led St. Pius with five kills.
Lauren McGum had seven assists. Anne Geiger recorded 11 digs.
