Despite dropping the first set of the season, the Union volleyball Lady ’Cats were up to the challenge Tuesday.

The Lady ’Cats (2-0) recorded a three-game home win over Potosi, 17-25, 25-22, 25-19.

Union hit the road Thursday, 25-11, 25-17 against Battle High School in Columbia.

The Lady ’Cats are back in action next Tuesday on the road at Mehlville. Subvarsity action starts at 5:30 p.m.

The next home match is next Thursday against North County. Subvarsity matches begin at 5:30 p.m.

Union had chances in all three games, but only was able to capitalize in the second and third.

“We started off slow, but it was good that the girls started playing together,” said Union Head Coach Angie Morris. “We finally started to communicate and make the big plays when they needed to. Once they started to communicate, we did well.”

After playing close for the first 15 points, Potosi was able to pull away somewhat. Union did close to within three points, 19-16, but couldn’t press closer.

In the second game, Union came out and scored four of the first five points.

Potosi came back and tied it at 19-19. But Union was able to separate itself after that and won, 25-22.

“By the third game, we finally found our groove,” Morris said. “We found what was working. The girls were making some big plays. They were trying to hit the open spots and they were doing that. That gave us the confidence we needed and gave us the momentum we needed.”

Senior Clare Stowe came alive near the end of the second game.

“Clare can be a strong offensive force,” Morris said. “She found where she needed to be.”

In the third, the Lady ’Cats got some big net play from Brooke Pope.

Pope served three aces in a row to help Union pull away from Potosi after the set had been tied at 15-15.

“Brooke was doing a good job putting up a big block and hitting, too,” Morris said. “She’s been working really hard on her serve. Those aces put us out on top.”

Pope also checked in with six kills and seven total blocks, including three solos.

Stowe posted four kills and six blocks, including three solos.

Maddy Weinhold ended with three blocks.

“I thought Lizzy Birkmann did a fantastic job, also,” Morris said.

“Overall, we need to work on serving, but we hit quite a few near the end,” Morris said.

The Lady ’Cats hit the road Thursday night and handed new Columbia school Battle a two-game loss.

Union also won both of the subvarsity matches in two games.

“The girls played an amazing first set,” Morris said. “They came out and played their game by serving and hitting aggressively. We put up a big block and the defense did a great job.”

Morris said Weinhold played a key role in the second game and Battle had trouble returning her serves.

“We started off struggling in the second set but Maddy Weinhold forced us ahead in the game with six consecutive aces,” Morris said. “She was on fire! She also did well placing the ball on offense.”

Stowe and Pope remained consistent offensive forces in the match.

“Clare and Brooke were dominating forces in the middle,” Morris said. “Clare had five kills and four blocks. Brooke had three kills and three blocks.”

Gaebe posted one kill and three blocks.

“They played as a team and communication was a big factor,” Morris said.
