Washington’s Brad Carpenter, Warrenton’s Ethan Luecke and Hermann’s Austin Ruediger were area golfers who earned all-state honors during the MSHSAA Championships Monday and Tuesday.

The top 15 individual finishers in each class earned all-state medals.

Carpenter won his second career Class 4 state medal, finishing in a tie for 10th place with rounds of 76 and 75 for a 151 total over 36 holes at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield.

“I played well both days,” Carpenter said. “I could have knocked down a few more shots here and there that would have put me closer to the top, but my goal was to be all-state, so I’m happy about that.”

Luecke was the Class 3 leader following the first day. He continued to hold the lead after 14 holes on the second day and shared the lead after 16 holes, but settled for a tie for second place with scores of 70 and 75 for a 145 total at Sedalia Country Club. He finished one shot behind the winner, Jack Litzelfelner of Cape Notre Dame.

Ruediger tied for 14th place in Class 2 at Fremont Hills Country Club in Nixa with scores of 81 and 78 for a 159 total.

Class 4

Carpenter and Colbey Schuster represented Washington at the Class 4 state tournament.

“Most of what I saw from Brad was classic Carpenter — deep, long drives, going for all par 5’s and aggressive puts,” said Washington Coach Tim Buschmann. “Brad managed the course well. He never had any blow-up holes.”

Schuster finished in a tie for 18th place with scores of 75 and 79 for a 154 total, one stroke out of the medals.

“Having carded his best ever score at sectionals, Colbey was looking forward to his second run at state. He was plus four on day one. He played conservatively from his normal style, several times opting for an iron off the tee. Colbey stayed within his game in day two, sticking with what he had done on day one. On hole No. 16, a par 3 playing 192 yards downhill, Colbey smashed a pitching wedge to 12 feet, but missed the birdie put. He wound up with a double bogey at 18 and missed state honors by one stroke.”

Vianney’s Matt Mueller and Rockhurst’s Patrick Byrne tied for top scores with 146.

Timberland claimed the Class 4 state championship with a score of 619, edging Rockhurst by two strokes.

“Rivercut was an excellent host,” Buschmann said. ‘The course was in excellent shape fairway to green. The greens were not the fastest we have seen, but not slow. The rough was what it should be for state competition. There wasn’t much OB (out-of-bounds) to worry about. There was a lot of water and sand.”

Class 3

Sullivan was the only area team to compete on the state level.

The Eagles were in ninth place following the first day, but jumped up three spots on the second day to finish in sixth place with 652.

MICDS won the Class 3 state title with 617. Cape Notre Dame was second with 620.

Golfers with scores of 154 and better earned medals.

Drew Armstrong paced Sullivan, placing in a tie for 18th place with scores of 78 and 78 for a 156 total, two strokes away from the medals.

Also playing for the Eagles were Ryan Juergens (83-81-164), Tylor Carrico (85-80-165), Gavin Yociss (85-84-169) and Justin Biermann (83-90-173).

“We represented our school well. We played against difficult competition on a course that was very demanding,” said Sullivan Coach Dino McKinney. “We played very tight on the first day. It’s hard to score well when you’re playing defensive golf. We swung a little more free on day two. I’m proud of the way we played all year, and the little comeback we made on day two. We passed some very good teams, and were only eight strokes away from fourth.”

Playing for Borgia in the Class 3 state tournament were Clayton Voss (87-81-168) and Alex Rennick (89-92-181).

Pacific was represented by Brendan Jett-Kell (87-92-179).

“Brendan had a couple of bad breaks on the first day, which caused his score to be a little higher than he expected. Day two was windy and he just didn’t get things rolling like he’s capable,” said Pacific Coach John VanLeer. “I’m proud of him for being a two-time state qualifier, first-team all-conference and going to play golf at Mineral Area. He will leave some big shoes for someone to fill.”

Class 2

Playing in the Class 2 state tournament for Hermann were Ruediger and Collin Hart.

Joining Ruediger as a Class 2 all-state golfer was Cuba’s Kody Ettinger, who finished in a four-way tie for second place (76-79-155), 10 strokes behind champion Justin Wrozier of Lutheran St. Charles (74-71-145).

Hart carded rounds of 90 and 83 for a 173 total.

Lutheran St. Charles won the Class 2 state championship at 635.
