Swimming always has been a popular summer sport around the area, as we’ve seen with the Washington, Pacific and Union swim programs.

But starting in September, it will be a fall sport, and a winter sport, as well.

St. Francis Borgia Regional High School has announced it will be adding boys and girls swimming starting this fall.

Borgia Athletic Director Brad Bruns said the agreement with the Four Rivers Area YMCA has just been finalized and that the teams will be offered this school year.

Boys swimming is a MSHSAA fall sport while girls swimming takes place in the winter season.

Bruns indicated practices for the boys team will not start until Tuesday, Sept. 3, and that the boys team would swim in the minimum number of meets — eight — this fall.

The school will gauge interest at its orientation meetings and early in the school year to see how many students are interested in going out for the teams.

Borgia also is looking for coaches for both teams.

More information will be passed along to the public as it is received.
