A promising start didn’t hold up for Washington in its GAC Central football finale last Friday at Ft. Zumwalt East.

The Blue Jays (2-6, 0-4) held a 7-6 lead after one quarter, but the unbeaten Lions took control from there in a 42-7 victory.

Ft. Zumwalt East (8-0, 4-0) led 21-7 at halftime and outscored the Blue Jays 21-0 in the third quarter to secure the outright conference championship.

“We were able to control the ball and control the line of scrimmage in the first half, which allowed us to still be in the game at halftime. We had a couple of drives stall around the 20-yard line and didn’t get any points out of them,” said Washington Head Coach Zach Schneider. “In the second half, turnovers and three-and-outs by our offense allowed them to do some things. You have to keep good offensive teams off the field and we didn’t do that in the second half.”

Statistics

Washington accumulated 225 yards, 158 rushing and 67 passing.

Kyle Summers carried the ball 16 times for 124 yards. On the season, he’s rushed for 1,502 yards. He also had three catches for 18 yards and one touchdown.

Quarterback Christian Hardesty was 12-20 passing for 67 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He rushed for 28 yards on eight attempts.

“Christian had a decent game. He did a good job spreading the ball around in the first half,” Schneider said. “Turnovers haunted us in the second half. We never got into a rhythm because we put the ball on the ground.”

Caleb Curran carried the ball three times for 21 yards and added two receptions.

Seth Bollmann finished with three catches for 34 yards. Calvin Blaylock added two receptions for 14 yards. Austin Finder also had two catches.

Defensively, DJ Quathem led the Blue Jays with eight solo tackles.

Nick Cunningham finished with six solo tackles. Nathan Kopp added five tackles while Teddy Harrison, Michael Wadlow, AJ Bartlett and Alex Schull each had four stops.

“We changed things up defensively and got some pressure on them, but we didn’t tackle particularly well,” Schneider said. “There were too many missed tackles. There were times we had them stopped for minimal games and let them get away.”

Ft. Zumwalt East accumulated 512 yards, 357 rushing and 155 passing.

It was a big game for junior quarterback Shane Barrett, who rushed for 225 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns. He was 8-12 passing for 155 yards and four touchdowns.

“Barrett is a tremendous quarterback. He’s similar to (former WHS quarterback) Matt Scheible in he runs the ball well and hits passes when defenses stop the run,” Schneider said. “They have some impressive athletes, but he’s the one who makes their offense go.”

Game Summary

Summers scored Washington’s touchdown on an eight-yard pass from Hardesty with 1:51 left in the first quarter.

Barrett tossed touchdown passes to Aramis Thomas and Matt Etherton in the second quarter to give the Lions a 21-7 halftime lead.

Barrett ran for a touchdown and threw two more in the third quarter, connecting again with Thomas and Etherton, to put the game away.

Standings

Washington currently is seeded fifth in the Class 5 District 4 standings heading into the final week of the regular season.

Camdenton has clinched the top seed and currently has 44.25 points. Lebanon has secured the second seed, sitting with 35.97 points. Both teams will receive first-round byes.

Smith-Cotton is seeded third with 27.07 points followed by Waynesville (25.1), Washington (23.39) and Rolla (14.27).

In week 10, the No. 3 seed will host the No. 6 seed (Rolla) and the No. 4 seed will host the No. 5 seed.

Washington needs a win this week to have a chance for a home game in week 10.

Howell North Preview

Washington visits Francis Howell North (2-6) Friday at 7 p.m.

The Knights lost last week at Timberland, 26-10. They’ve also lost to Vianney (42-28), Zumwalt East (45-15), Francis Howell (44-0), Howell Central (37-21) and Ft. Zumwalt West (35-20).

Wins have come over Ft. Zumwalt South 48-20 and Troy, 58-20.

“Howell North has put up some points, like we have, in some games, and have struggled, like we have in others. Their quarterback can run. He has good speed. We have to keep everything in front of us,” Schneider said. “Offensively, we have to control the ball and keep their offense off the field. It’s a big game. If we can beat a Class 6 school, we could jump over some people in the district standings.”
