By scoring 10 unanswered runs, the Union Post 297 Junior Legion baseball team turned a close game into a blowout.

Union topped Hannibal Post 55, 13-2, in game one of a doubleheader on Thursday.

Post 297 took game two, 10-3, to complete the sweep.

The sweep gave Union the second seed for this week’s district tournament.

"These were two huge wins as they wrapped the second seed in the district tournament," Union Manager Ryan Bailey said. "The boys have accomplished quite a bit this summer and it was great to see them make the two-hour drive to Hannibal and then come out ready to play ball."

In game one, the visitors led 3-2 after the first inning before erupting for 10 unanswered runs over the next six innings to blow the game open. Union scored three runs in both the second and third innings, and then added two runs apiece in the fifth and seventh innings for the final margin.

"We hit the ball really well, scoring in five of the seven innings we played," Bailey said. "It was a nice game for a lot of guys to get some quality at-bats."

Union scored 13 runs on 14 hits and also took advantage of six Hannibal errors in game one’s win.

Blake Pickard went 3-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Bobby Curnutte drove in two runs on two hits, while Nick Eads, Drew Reed and Justin Mentz all had one RBI apiece.

Dillon Breeden got the win on the mound, going three innings and allowing no earned runs. He struck out three and gave up two hits. Pickard went three innings and Trent Kranz pitched one inning.

Collin Pettit took the loss for Hannibal, allowing two earned runs in 4.1 innings. Austin Noble had two RBIs for Post 55.

In the second game, a six-run third inning propelled Post 297 to victory.

"We were able to break the game open in the third, scoring six runs on some timely hitting and three hit batters,"  Bailey said. "Our bats fell silent for the next few innings and Hannibal cut the lead to four, but RBI singles by Drew Reed and Emmett Parker extended our lead back to seven and we cruised from there."

Union led 1-0 before six runs in the third and three more in the sixth accounted for the final score. Hannibal’s runs came in the fourth and sixth. Post 55 had just three hits in the game.

Union recorded 11 hits. Reed and Emmett Parker drove in two runs apiece, while Eads and Kendall Sheler had one RBI apiece. Parker had three hits, while Reed, Sheler and Eads recorded two hits apiece.

Chris Griffin got the win on the hill, going 3.2 innings and striking out four. He allowed just one earned run. Sheler pitched the final 3.1 innings and struck out three.

"Chris Griffin has pitched outstanding in relief for us this year and we've really wanted to get him a win on the mound," Bailey said. "He's had a few chances and things just haven't worked out so it was great today for him to go out, throw strikes, and for our bats to get him a lead."

Colten Brummell took the loss for Hannibal. He allowed three earned runs and four hits in 2.2 innings.
