Through the first three games of the 2013 season, the Union Wildcats have proven they can score points.

But hosting Pacific Friday night, the Wildcats showed they can play some defense as well.

Union (2-2, 1-1) shut out Pacific (1-3, 0-2) at Stierberger Stadium, 40-0.

Union's defensive effort included three successful stands in the red zone.

The first half belonged to the Wildcats.

Union came up with the big plays when it needed to and got a couple of huge defensive stands as well.

The Wildcats opened scoring with 7:24 left in the first quarter when quarterback Blake Hulsey found Logan Bellamy in the corner of the end zone for a four-yard touchdown. Tyler Brown's extra-point kick made it 7-0 after the opening drive.

Union's opening drive featured many things, including three swinging gate plays in a row which Union was able to exploit for positive yardage.

Union's defense came up with its first big stop on Pacific's first drive. TreLin Edwards intercepted a a Lucas Zurliene pass at the Union five to end that drive.

Union drove down the field to score again.

Jobie Richardson, stopped at the Pacific one on the first drive, got this score on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Hulsey down the right sideline.

Richardson made the pass and then shrugged off several tacklers to break free and score the touchdown with 2:06 left in the quarter. Brown's extra-point kick was blocked and Union led 13-0 after one quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Hulsey was picked off by Danny Nickelson, who returned the ball to the Union 20.

Zurliene ran to the Union two on fourth and seven, but the Wildcats held, stopping one run and two passes. A penalty for an illegal shift helped the Wildcats. In the end, a Pacific field goal attempt of 25 yards missed and Pacific was held scoreless.

Union added to its lead with 4:26 left in the half. On fourth down, Hulsey again found Bellamy for a 28-yard touchdown pass on the left side. Bellamy then caught a pass from Hulsey on the left side of the end zone for the two-point converion.

Union's offensive line gave Hulsey plenty of time to find receivers in the first half and he was able to distribute to several different teammates.

Meanwhile, Pacific's final drive of the half was hampered by two sacks as Union brought the pressure.

Union made its third red zone stop of the night, halting the Indians at the Union nine to start the third quarter.

Bellamy broke up a stagnant third quarter by returning a punt 53 yards for a touchdown with 3:10 to play in the third quarter.

Union made a controversial decision after a penalty on the extra point. Brown kicked the original extra point, but Union took the penalty. Brown's re-kick was no good and Union led 27-0.

Hulsey's line gave him enough time to find a wide-open Edwards on the left side to take the ball to the Pacific one. Hulsey ran in from there with 10:09 left in the game. The two-point conversion pass failed and Union led 33-0.

After Pacific turned the ball over on downs near the Union 40, the Wildcats struck back quickly.

Hulsey found Jacob Carman for a big gain down to the Pacific 21.

After a holding penalty, Bellamy picked up most of that on a reception from Hulsey on the next play.

Union finished the drive on a two-yard run by Lukis Ladymon with 6:36 to play. Brown's kick made it 40-0 and activated the running clock.

Pacific, forced to try to move quickly, could not counter in the closing minutes.

Union visits St. Clair next week while Pacific will take on Sullivan.
