After having the first five doubleheaders and one tournament called off due to weather, the East Central College softball Falcons were eager to head onto the field Thursday afternoon.

However, Head Coach Brad Wallach might have wanted to see one more rainout after ECC fell in a Midwest Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader to rival Jefferson College, 9-4 and 13-1.

“For the most part, we looked like a team that hadn’t played a game in a long time facing a very good team with purpose,” ECC Head Coach Brad Wallach said. “Overall, we tried to do too much, didn’t stay within ourselves, and made a good team look even better.”

The Falcons (0-2, 0-2) faced a huge challenge Friday afternoon, traveling to Poplar Bluff to take on Three Rivers Community College in MCCAC action. Three Rivers swept Jefferson Tuesday at the same location.

“Overall, Jefferson is a very good team that doesn’t need any help but we gave it to them anyway, because we couldn’t deal with first game jitters and keep our emotions in check,” Wallach said. “It won’t get any easier today at Three Rivers but hopefully we’ll play with better composure and offer a better picture of who we are. Yesterday was a humbling experience but we need to deal with it, get over it, and play more like we’re capable.”

After Friday’s doubleheader, the Falcons stay on the road. ECC plays the Central Methodist Junior Varsity team in Fayette Sunday at 4 p.m.

The Falcons move over to Marshall Monday to take on the Missouri Valley JV Monday at 2 p.m.

ECC returns home for another critical MCCAC doubleheader Tuesday against Mineral Area College. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.

There weren’t many highlights in either game Thursday for the Falcons. Facing a Jefferson College squad which already had played six times, every little mistake was amplified.

The Vikings loaded the bases in the top of the second inning before Sullivan graduate Jett Bouckaert hammered a Julie Scheer (New Haven) pitch over the left center field fence for a grand slam.

While Scheer was able to settle down after early walks, ECC never could recover.

“Julie settled down a little bit after the third inning,” Wallach said. “She struck out three and walked five.”

Jefferson added two runs in the third to the five scored in the second. The Falcons scored three times in the fifth on a home run by sophomore Grace Fritz (Borgia). Fritz ended by going 3-4.

Freshman Megan Heimbaugh (Rolla) hit a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh.

Also ending with hits were freshmen Michelle Bryant (Crocker) and Abby Job (Warrenton).

The Falcons struggled at the plate with 16 strikeouts.

The second game started with some promise. Jefferson scored first, but the Falcons pulled off a double steal in the bottom of the frame with Fritz taking home on the play.

That was the lone highlight for the Falcons.

The Vikings scored five times in the second and seven times in the third on the way to ending it in five innings.

The Falcons made five errors in the game.

“Six different people got their first start in this game so it was more of the same, Wallach said.

Chelsea Bax (Fatima) started the game while Scheer and Haley Zenner (Dubuque, Iowa) relieved.

“Our defense didn’t help our pitchers much,” Wallach said. “When you give Jefferson five or six outs an inning, it’s going to get ugly in a hurry and it did.”

ECC had four hits in the game with Fritz, Bryant, Scheer and sophomore Amber Odom (Linn) earning those.
