Washington 24, St. Clair 15
ST. CLAIR — Washington overcame a 15-0 halftime deficit with 24 unanswered points in the second half to win its football opener Friday at St. Clair High School, 24-15.
Leading the charge for the Blue Jays was senior running back Kyle Summers, who rushed for 214 yards and three touchdowns in the contest.
Depth may have played a role in the game on the hot night as the Blue Jays seemed to wear the Bulldogs down in the second half.
The two teams combined for seven turnovers in the game, four by St. Clair and three by Washington.
St. Clair quarterback Collin Scott rushed for 131 yards and one touchdown to lead the Bulldogs.
Isaac Lippert and Christian Hardesty split time at quarterback for Washington.
St. Clair got on the scoreboard first with 8:58 left in the first quarter on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Ian McQueen on a fourth-and-six play.
McQueen later left the game with a possible concussion.
The Bulldogs (0-1) struck again with 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter on a 47-yard touchdown run by Scott.
St. Clair led 15-0 at halftime.
Washington began its comeback when Summers raced for a 58-yard touchdown run 17 seconds into the third quarter to make the score 15-6.
The Blue Jays (1-0) struck again with 4:12 left in the third quarter on a 57-yard touchdown pass from Lippert to Seth Bollmann to make the score 15-12.
After St. Clair turned the ball over for the second time in the quarter, Washington took the lead on a 42-yard touchdown run by Summers to make the score 18-15.
The Blue Jays put the game away with 9:09 left in the fourth quarter on a 45-yard touchdown run by Summers to increase the advantage to 24-15.
In week two games, Washington opens its new turf field Friday against Timberland (1-0). St. Clair is at home again against De Soto (0-1). Both games are slated for 7 p.m.
