Craig's Corner: Spring Sports Postseason Arrives

It’s hard to believe, but high school sports are quickly coming to an end.

By this time next week, most spring sports teams and athletes will be done for the season.

Wet weather has washed out a number of games and meets, which has limited the number of spring competitions.

Speaking of wet weather and rainouts, news came out Monday night that Union High School is getting a new turf field and a track. Work begins in a couple of weeks. The Washington High School project already is under way.

We still have many things to look forward to before the summer arrives.

The state golf meet takes place Monday and Tuesday in Springfield (Class 4) and Sedalia (Class 3).

Many area golfers, including Sullivan’s team, will participate.

It’s going to be a busy next few weeks in track and field with postseason meets taking place.

We’re already off to a good start with the New Haven Lady Shamrocks winning the Class 1 District 1 title last Saturday. It was the first district championship in the history of the girls track program.

Larger schools compete in district track events this Saturday. Sectional and state meets will follow.

Washington’s girls, Union’s girls and St. Clair’s boys all won conference championships and will be teams to deal with in the postseason.

Athletes from other teams also will do some damage.

District baseball tournaments begin Saturday.

Class 4 District 4, to be played at Ronsick Field in Washington, will be very interesting. Not only do we have Borgia, Pacific, St. Clair and Union, but throw in top-seeded Westminster, the two-time defending Class 3 state champions.

Westminster is 23-3 on the season and is loaded with talent. The Wildcats have four pitchers who have started at least four games and are unbeaten.

Leading the way is southpaw Ben Lovell, who is 6-0 with a 1.37 ERA.

Second-seeded Borgia (13-6) has similar depth on its pitching staff. The Knights have thrown three no-hitters by three different pitchers this season.

Tony Helfrich is 4-0 with a 0.39 ERA. He’s allowed two earned runs in 36 innings this season.

Both Westminster and Borgia have first-round district byes and open in the semifinals on Monday.

The big question is will they save their aces for a potential championship game matchup? A Lovell-Helfrich matchup would be a must-see game.

Then again, you have to get to the championship game first in order to win it. Will the aces throw in the semifinals?

Can Pacific, St. Clair, Union or Priory knock off one of the top two seeds in the semifinals? It should be a great few days of baseball.

Washington faces a similar challenge in Class 5 District 8 at Holt.

The Blue Jays are seeded fourth and take on Hannibal Saturday in the first round.

The winner takes on mighty Francis Howell in the semifinals. The Vikings are 27-5 on the season. Holt, the GAC Central champion, is seeded second.

It will be a tough road for the Blue Jays, but they do have enough pitching to make a run.

Sullivan has a great shot at winning the Class 4 District 9 Tournament, which takes place in Sullivan.

It’s been a great school year for Sullivan athletics and it likely will continue for the baseball team.

New Haven is seeded fifth in Class 2 District 8 at New Bloomfield, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see the Shamrocks make a district run.

Union appears to have the best shot to advance to the girls soccer state playoffs. Bethany Coons has scored 33 goals this season. Alyssa Coons has added 18 goals.

The Lady ’Cats, the Four Rivers Conference champs, own a perfect record against area teams this season.

Will Borgia or Sullivan, or maybe even St. Clair or Pacific, be able to slow down Union in the Class 2 District 9 Tournament at Borgia?

The Lady Knights seem to have the best shot, but it won’t be easy.

Washington is seeded second in Class 3 District 6 at Troy and has a chance to do some damage.

If the Lady Jays play their game, they have a shot.
