It’s been a week of milestones for the Borgia basketball Lady Knights.

Following road victories over Bishop DuBourg Tuesday (56-35) and St. Dominic Wednesday (49-41), Borgia claimed the outright Archdiocesan Athletic Association Large Division title and reached the 20-win plateau for the season. It’s the second year in a row Borgia won the Large Division crown.

“Winning the AAA conference is one of the goals we set out to accomplish,” Borgia Head Coach Stacia Parsell said. “We are excited to reach that goal for the second straight year. A 20-win season is fantastic. But we don’t focus on records, we really just focus on winning each game. When we play together we are a tough team to beat.”

Borgia (20-2, 7-0) has one final conference home game Friday against Rosati-Kain and another home game against St. Charles next Tuesday.

The Rosati-Kain event is a tripleheader starting at 4 p.m. The St. Charles contest opens with junior varsity action at 5 p.m.

Parsell said it’s been a very difficult week, which started with a road victory over AAA Small Division power Lutheran St. Charles Monday.

“It has been a tough week with three conference road games,” said Parsell. “We had to focus on each game separately and stay focused on the moment.”

Bishop DuBourg

In Tuesday’s game, the Lady Knights jumped out to a big early lead, outscoring the host Lady Cavaliers by a 21-9 margin in the first quarter.

Borgia led 32-15 at the half and 52-27 after three quarters.

Borgia pushed the ball to senior standout Janie Arand and she came through by leading all scorers with 21 points. She also had six rebounds, one assist and one steal.

“Janie Arand has improved her scoring and knows when it is time to take over the game,” Parsell said.

Sophomore Megan Jensen was next in scoring with 10 points, six rebounds and one assist.

Senior Emily Grahl netted eight points and added five rebounds, four assists and a steal.

Sophomore Kaylee Heggemann scored eight points with two rebounds, one assist, a blocked shot and one steal.

Junior Molly Arand scored three points and added three assists, two rebounds and two steals.

Junior Cassandra Halsted netted two points with two rebounds and a steal.

Junior Holly Swartz scored two points and pulled down five rebounds.

Freshman Brooke Voss scored two points and added two rebounds and an assist.

Also playing were freshman Aly Glosemeyer, sophomore Erica Huber, junior Josie Krawitz (one rebound) and sophomore Allison Stapel (one assist, one rebound).

Clair Ford led DuBourg in scoring with 14 points. She also had four rebounds, two assists, a blocked shot and a steal.

Shannon Cahill ended with 11 points with two rebounds, one assist, one blocked shot and one steal.

St. Dominic

The Lady Knights jumped out to an early lead on St. Dominic Wednesday, something which has become the team’s path to victory frequently this season.

Borgia led 13-6 after one quarter and 28-11 at the half.

St. Dominic cut into the lead in the second half. It was 39-24 after three quarters and St. Dominic made a run in the fourth to cut the final margin to eight points, 49-41.

“We had a commanding lead but let them back into the game with costly turnovers,” Parsell said. “Our focus will be eliminating mistakes as we reach the postseason.”

Janie Arand led the Lady Knights in scoring with 23 points. She added nine rebounds and two assists,

Jensen posted seven points while pulling down 14 rebounds. She also had two assists and two steals.

Grahl ended with six points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
