It seemed fitting that Borgia senior Janie Arand recorded her 1,000th career point last Thursday on a free throw.

“I’m really excited,” Arand said. “I’m glad I got to do this on our home floor. I’m glad we won. That was the most important thing.”

Arand, who led Borgia to a 56-24 home victory over Bishop DuBourg last Thursday, has hit a number of crucial free throws during her four-year career with the Lady Knights.

“I just took the ball and went to the basket,” Arand said. “I just focused on making my free throws. After the photo, I just refocused on what I needed to do.”

She made both free throws after the foul despite being presented the game ball and posing for a photo with her parents and Borgia Head Coach Stacia Parsell between the two attempts.

“I’m glad I got it over in the first half,” Arand said.

“It was a good crowd and we’re glad everyone came out to support us and to support Janie making her 1,000th point tonight,” Parsell said after the game.

Arand broke into Borgia’s varsity unit as a freshman in the 2010-11 season and was the first player off the bench as Borgia reached the MSHSAA Class 4 state tournament. Borgia’s win over Farmington in the third-place game that year gave Borgia its highest state finish ever.

Following that time, Arand became a fixture in Borgia’s starting lineup. She helped the team transition into the Archdiocesan Athletic Association last season and was named the Large Division player of the year while helping the Lady Knights win the title.

Arand also was honored by being named to the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association and Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters all-state teams.

This year, Arand already has helped Borgia win the Peoples Bank Holiday Classic title over host Sullivan and was named to the all-tournament team there.

“I wasn’t trying to rush it at Sullivan,” Arand said. “If it came there, it came. It just happened to come after the break, which was fine, too.”

A three-sport standout at Borgia, Arand will continue her basketball career at Missouri S&T next year. She has signed with the Lady Miners for basketball.

“It’s been a great senior year,” Arand said. “I’m just going to keep building on it with basketball and go from there.”

You might say that playing college sports is in her blood. Both parents, Chris and Laura (Dill) Arand were college athletes. Chris played basketball while Laura was an academic All-American volleyball player at Southeast Missouri State.

Janie also has been privileged to share many of her high school sports adventures with her younger sister Molly. A junior, Molly Arand plays the same three sports, volleyball, basketball and soccer, as Janie.

Janie also has been a volleyball and soccer standout with Borgia. She was named the AAA Large Division volleyball player of the year while leading Borgia to the Class 3 state championship this fall.

Additionally, she was named to the Missouri High School Volleyball Coaches Class 3 all-state team and was named Missourian All-Area co-player of the year (along with Hermann’s Jamie Gleeson).

Arand has helped Borgia to district titles in all three sports and hopes to continue her postseason success in 2014.
