It’s been a busy fall practice schedule for Borgia’s teams.

Borgia’s baseball/softball field project hasn’t been fully started yet, but some preliminary work is being done.

The ATG Sports company is working on the Union football/soccer field project and has decided to start the Borgia field project when it can bring the entire crew over, according to school sources.

To prepare, some fencing is being removed so the current infield surface can be prepared to receive the turf. Other work will include moving fences and bullpen areas. Also, it’s expected that the scoreboard will be added when the full project gets going.

Football

It looks like Borgia will have a freshman football team after all.

The school had 11 players come out for the squad on the opening day and could add from there.

As of the middle of this week, the plan is to play junior varsity games first and then field a freshman team, with possibly some sophomores, for two quarters to give the youngsters playing time.

“It’s good news where we have picked up a couple of kids,” Borgia Head Coach Dale Gildehaus said. “We’re actually doing better than expected.”

Two games have been dropped from the freshman schedule though. The freshman contests with Helias and Festus have been shelved. It’s unknown whether those opponents will be replaced on the schedule.

While Borgia has struggled to find freshmen, the Knights also are low among seniors as well with only seven final-year players on the roster.

Borgia will host a jamboree next Friday with Washington, Cardinal Ritter and University City coming to campus.

Softball

After going 10-14 last season and losing in the district semifinals to Union, the Borgia softball Lady Knights will build around three longtime varsity players, said Head Coach Stan Westhoff.

Taylor Nadler, Elizabeth Westhoff and Cali Witte each are three-year starters who are back this fall. Nadler will catch while Westhoff plays in the outfield. Witte will pitch and play in the infield.

“We had a strong underclassman turnout,” Westhoff said. “It is very exciting for this year. With the strength of these classes the team should have a bright future.”

Borgia had three juniors, eight sophomores and nine freshmen come out for the team, giving the program a total of 23 players, meaning there will be no problems in fielding both varsity and junior varsity teams.

Other returning starters are Jodi Glosemeyer at second base and Kaylee Heggemann in the outfield.

“Generally speaking, it will take some time for us to meld as a team and the beginning of the schedule is very challenging this year again,” Westhoff said. “But I feel confident that with the experience we have and the strong upcoming players, we should have a very successful season.”

Westhoff indicated Rachel Boley will see action at pitcher while Megan Jensen, Katie Kluesner, Peyton Keene and Katelyn Gratza fighting for the remaining starting spots.

Borgia has moved its practice location with the start of the turf project at the high school field. The Lady Knights look to be playing games there before the start of the district tournament Oct. 9.

Borgia starts the season at home Aug. 29 against Union.

Girls Golf

Citing one of the best turnouts in years, the Borgia girls golf team currently has 16 players out for the roster, five more than this time last year.

“And we could have more when school starts,” said Coach Chip Thompson.

The team includes nine returning players from last year’s team, including four of the five girls who played in the district tournament last fall.

The returning players from that district team are Katie Eime, Elizabeth King, Holly Swartz and Haleigh Forget.

“We’ve got seven newcomers so far,” Thompson said. That includes one senior, one junior, one sophomore and four freshmen. It’s been a while since we’ve had this many freshmen.”

Thompson also reported the schedule is nearly completed.

Volleyball

Brad Bruns and his staff made difficult decisions Tuesday in cuts and are down to their final rosters.

The varsity team has eight returning players with Janie Arand, Molly Arand, Clara Blatt, Alivia Brinker, Sarah Geatley, Erin Hillerman, Emma Kriete, Jordan Kriete and Maddie Toelke coming back this season.

Varsity newcomers are Audrey Arand, Allie Marquart and Elizabeth Mattli.

The Lady Knights will play in a preseason event Aug. 26-27 at Lafayette. The freshmen and junior varsity teams will play Monday, Aug. 26, while the varsity will travel to Wildwood Tuesday, Aug. 27.

Other teams who will be there include Lafayette and Eureka.
