Two of the top wrestling programs in the GAC hooked up for a dual meet Thursday as Washington hosted Holt.

The visiting Indians, who placed fourth in the state in Class 4 last season, edged the Class 3 Blue Jays, 38-28.

“Holt is a very tough team that’s extremely well coached,” said Washington Head Coach Josh Ohm. “We definitely started slow, but made a push at the end to get back in the dual.”

Matches were contested in all 14 weight classes with Holt winning eight of them and Washington taking six.

Holt jumped to a 26-0 lead by winning the first five weight classes before the Blue Jays slowly started to inch back into the contest.

Washington claimed six of the final nine matches, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the Indians.

“If we could have scored in the bonus in a couple of matches, we would have gotten the win, which would have been a big moment for our program. It’s frustrating to think we let that one slip away,” Ohm said. “Although it was disappointing, we learned where we stand at this point in the season and that’s a good thing. We are right there and once we make some lineup changes next week, I think we will be a completely different team. That’s exciting for us.”

Winning matches for the Blue Jays were:

• 138 — Cody Gardner won by decision over Ben Daly, 6-0.

• 145 — Josh Luck won by decision over Kyle Bishop, 4-1.

• 152 — Cole Hamai pinned Austin Keller in 3:02.

“I was very impressed with Hamai. At that point, we only had six points in the meet and he had a tough kid,” Ohm said. “He went out there and dominated the match until he got the fall and the bonus. That really sparked us and changed the momentum. From that point on, it was a great dual to watch.”

• 182 — Kyle Summers pinned Nate Farabee in 3:57.

“Kyle did a great job,” Ohm said. “He knew that getting anything less than the fall was not acceptable. He was patient, waited for his opportunity, took it and got the fall.”

• 195 — Logan Baird won by major decision over Devon Byrd, 9-0.

• 285 — Matt Pecka pinned Gerald Harris in 1:37.

“Matt is off to a great start,” Ohm said. “It seems that after three years, he has really taken to heart everything we’ve been telling him. He’s having a dominant year.”

Winning matches for the Indians were:

• 106 — Sidney Oliver won by technical fall over Cody Hey, 21-5.

• 113 — Clayton Berry pinned Jonathan Kelpe in 58 seconds.

• 120 — Mike Brown pinned Parker Neptune in 1:23.

• 126 — Gavin Londoff pinned Joe Omer in 3:08.

• 132 — Colby Smith won by decision over Nicholas Solter, 7-1. Smith was the Class 4 state champion at 120 pounds last season.

“Nicholas wrestled a defending state champion and I thought he did a great job,” Ohm said. “Nicholas needs to wrestle matches like that now to prepare him for February.”

• 160 — Emilio Monsivais won by decision over Corey Kluesner, 4-2.

• 170 — Cee Monsivais won by decision over Jeremy Monehan, 7-6.

• 220 — Brad Jones pinned Jacob Kliethermes in 1:57.
