Washington started fast and owned the second half in a girls basketball victory Tuesday at Warrenton High School.

The Lady Jays (2-0) held the lead throughout the game in a 66-34 victory.

“I was extremely proud of the girls. We came out ready to play from the tip off and put a lot of pressure on Warrenton,” said Washington Head Coach Adam Fischer. “We got ourselves in some major foul trouble early, but I had a ton of kids come off the bench to play huge roles.”

Washington held a 23-9 lead after one quarter.

Warrenton got back in the game with a 16-12 second quarter run, which trimmed Washington’s advantage to 35-25 at halftime.

The second half belonged to the Lady Jays, who outscored Warrenton, 31-9, including 19-5 in the third quarter.

“In both halves we started with big runs to open the scoring up a little,” Fischer said. “We really attacked the basket in the second half and made the right passes to give ourselves the best shot. It was a great team win.”

Kyra Hardesty, a freshman guard, led a balanced Washington scoring attack with 14 points.

Seniors Courtney Kedroski and Rachel Kackley both finished the game with 12 points.

Megan Bauche and Megan Freitag both registered nine points.

Paige Carpenter collected four points. Grace Evans totaled three points. Emma Boehmer scored two points. Alex Ready had one point.

“Megan Freitag and Megan Bauche did an excellent job getting out in transition and attacking the basket,” Fischer said. “We rebounded the ball well on the defensive end and that allowed us to push the ball up the floor. Our defense led to us jumping out to an 11-0 run to start the second half.”

Washington struggled shooting the ball from the perimeter, but found other ways to score.

“We did not shoot the ball well from the outside in the first half. At halftime, we talked about attacking the basket more and making the extra pass,” Fischer said. “We did a great job getting to the basket and finishing our shots or passing to the open girl.”

Warrenton (1-1) had only three players who scored. Jenny Jansen finished with 14 points while Hannah Sutton and Kylie Toebben both added 10 points.
