After Wednesday’s sweep at Borgia, the Washington Post 218 Senior Legion team might want to play more doubleheaders.

Playing back-to-back games in the Washington Post 218 Wood Bat Tournament at Borgia, the host squad posted a sweep of 10th District competition Manchester and Thoman Boothe.

Post 218 opened with an 8-0 win over Manchester in the opening game and closed the first day with a 5-1 win over Thoman Boothe.

The day’s common theme for Washington was strong pitching. Tony Helfrich tossed a five-hit shutout in the opener and Jared Walde held Thoman Boothe to one run on three hits in the second game.

“We really played well against Manchester,” Post 218 Manager Mike Gardner said. “Tony Helfrich went the distance and we played great defense.”

Walde took charge in the second game.

“Jared Walde came out and pitched his best game of the year,” Gardner said. “About the fourth he found his command of the strike zone and was dominant after that.”

Through Thursday’s action, Washington was the only team in Pool C to be 2-0.

Dunklin County shut out Springfield in its first game, 10-0. That means Friday night’s 7:30 p.m. game at Rotary Recreational Complex - Ronsick Field could go a long way toward determining the pool champion.

Post 218 will finish out pool action Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against Springfield, which was 0-1 going into action Friday.

Manchester was 1-1 while Thoman Boothe was 0-2.

Pool winners and one wildcard will advance to the semifinals of the 15-team tournament Sunday.

In Pool A, Jefferson City was 2-0 with West, Eureka and Ballwin at 1-1. House Springs was 0-2.

In Pool B, Jackson stood at 2-0 with St. Charles, Creve Coeur and Fike each at 1-1. St. Peters was 0-2.

Scoring four runs in the bottom of the first gave Post 218 the cushion it needed to hold down Manchester.

“We were really patient at the plate and were able to take several walks,” Gardner said. “Matt Jones came through with a bases-loaded double in the first that cleared the bases and we never looked back.”

Washington added another run in the third and three in the fifth.

Helfrich and his defense made sure that Manchester didn’t get much more. Over seven innings, he held Manchester to five hits and three walks while striking out eight batters.

Offensively, Washington’s eight hits came from seven different batters.

Jack Kopmann led the way with two hits, including a double.

Matt Jones and Noah Borgerding also doubled in the game. Trent Leimkuehler, Luke Hasenjaeger, Sam Katzung and Ben Huffman posted singles.

Dilan Bollmann and Leimkuehler each scored twice. Grant Eckelkamp, Borgerding, Hasenjaeger and Todd Kleekamp also scored runs.

Jones recorded two RBIs while Borgerding and Hasenjaeger each drove in one.

Bollmann drew two walks. Eckelkamp walked once.

Hasenjaeger was hit by a pitch. Bollmann and Leimkuehler stole bases.

Thoman Boothe

Washington was the visiting team for the day’s second game against Thoman Boothe at Borgia.

Post 218 scored once in the first and once in the second before the Overland team cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second, 2-1.

In the third inning, Post 218 scored once and that held up until Washington added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

“It was a tight game until Luke provided a big two out hit in the seventh, driving in two runs,” Gardner said.

Walde went the distance for Washington, allowing one run on three hits and one walk. He struck out five.

Washington’s seven hits were spread among six different players.

Eckelkamp posted two singles.

Leimkuehler and Bollmann each doubled.

Hasenjaeger, Borgerding and Katzung hit singles.

Eckelkamp scored three runs while Borgerding and Bollmann also crossed the plate.

Hasenjaeger and Leimkuehler drove in two runs apiece. Kopmann had one RBI.

Eckelkamp drew Washington’s only walk.

Hasenjaeger posted a sacrifice bunt while Leimkuehler had a sacrifice fly. Justin Schuler was hit by a pitch.

Eckelkamp stole two bases and Schuler stole one.
