Playing Friday and Saturday at the Rolla Round-Robin Girls Soccer Tournament, Washington captured a first-place finish with a 2-0-1 record.

The Lady Jays (4-0-1) notched wins Friday over Rolla, 2-1, and Saturday over Northwest, 2-0. They ended the tournament with a 1-1 tie against Springfield Catholic.

Washington was the only one of the four teams to go unbeaten. Rolla defeated Springfield Catholic.

“The girls played very well over the two days,” said Washington Head Coach Chris Lanemann.

Rolla

Washington fell behind 1-0 on a penalty kick goal, but scored the next two goals in the 2-1 win over Rolla.

Halee Nurnberger scored both goals for the Lady Jays. Arika Elliott had both assists.

Mary McGilvray played all 80 minutes in goal for Washington, collecting three saves.

“The girls played pretty well. The only goal we gave up was a penalty kick,” Lanemann said. “Offensively, I would have liked to finish more of our chances, but we beat a very good Rolla team.”

Northwest

Washington returned to action Saturday, knocking off Northwest by the 2-0 score.

Elliott and Nurnberger scored for the Lady Jays, both coming in the second half.

Salena Pottebaum and Brianna Pagan had the assists.

McGilvray played the entire game in goal for the shutout, registering two saves.

“Defensively, we were led by Taylor Andrews, Sierra Thibault, Amanda Aiello and Elanna Osthoff,” Lanemann said. “We played extremely well. We limited Northwest to just two shots on goal.”

The Lady Jays had plenty of scoring opportunities.

“Offensively, we carried the play for the entire 80 minutes. The problem was we kept playing everything to the middle and had a hard time finishing as a result,” Lanemann said. “We needed to spread them out and use the wings more. We had 17 shots on goal and converted just two. We need to get better in that phase of the game.”

Springfield Catholic

Washington concluded the tournament with the 1-1 tie with Springfield Catholic.

“Overall, we carried the play and again limited our opposition to less than four shots. We gave up just three shots on goal,” Lanemann said. “We had a defensive miscommunication that cost us the goal. Other than that, the defense again played a stellar game.”

Liz Brinkmann scored the Lady Jays’ goal on an assist from Bailey Carico.

McGilvray made two saves while playing the entire contest in goal.

“In the midfield, we completely controlled the game,” Lanemann said. “Arika Elliott, Brianna Pagan, Liz Brinkmann, Destiny Hofstetter, Stacie Smith, Savannah Thibault and Bailey Carico all played very well.”
