Nick Thiel tossed a four-hitter and Washington collected 13 hits in a 10-1 baseball victory Tuesday at Warrenton.

The Blue Jays’ game Wednesday at Winfield was rained out and rescheduled for April 25.

Against Warrenton, the Blue Jays scored two runs in the top of the first inning, two in the third, three in the fourth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.

“We’re beating the teams we’re supposed to beat, which is a good thing,” said Washington Head Coach Scott Bray. “We have to get better. I told the guys if that game was against a GA Central team, we probably would have lost. Our plate coverage wasn’t good. We were clueless at the plate at times. We had 13 hits, but we also struck out eight times.”

Thiel pitched all seven innings for the win. He allowed one run on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

“Nick threw strikes. That was the main thing. He threw only 66 pitches. His pitch count was low and he felt great,” Bray said. “Warrenton had a lineup of free swingers. They were swinging at everything. Nick threw five pitches in one inning.”

Finishing with two hits apiece for the Blue Jays were Brian Trigg, Matt McGilvray, Aaron Meyer, Camron Shipley and Sam Katzung. McGilvray also drew a walk.

Meyer added three RBIs and three runs. McGilvray scored two runs. Katzung had two RBIs.

“Those five guys basically are the top five guys in our batting order,” Bray said. “Trigg and McGilvray have done a good job getting on base and the guys in the middle of the lineup have been driving them in.”

Matt Miller, Scott Byrne and Seth Bollmann each finished with one hit. Byrne also drew a walk.

Hunter Capstick and Ben Stephens both had two hits for Warrenton (2-3). Capstick scored the lone run on an RBI by Stephens.

Washington (4-1) hosts Lutheran South Monday at 4:30 p.m. and begins GAC Central action with games against Ft. Zumwalt East Tuesday on the road and Wednesday at home at 4:30 p.m.

“We’ll be tested next week against Lutheran South and Ft. Zumwalt East,” Bray said. “Our kids realize there are improvements to be made. We’re off to a good start and I’m happy about that. We just have to get better as we start our conference schedule.”
