Looking for a three-peat at the Owensville Boys Basketball Tournament, Pacific started in a big way Thursday night.

The top-seeded Indians (7-2) put up 33 points in the first quarter and cruised to a 75-37 win over eighth-seeded Steelville.

“We came out and jumped on them right off the bat, which was good to see,” said Pacific Head Coach John VanLeer. “It was our first game in three weeks. We haven’t been in school much or practiced as much as I would have liked, but that didn’t seem to affect us much offensively.”

Pacific was scheduled to play fourth-seeded Linn in the semifinals Friday night. Linn edged fifth-seeded Hermann, 53-51.

Craig Winkelmann scored 22 points for Hermann (3-6).

The other semifinal game Friday featured second-seeded Sullivan against sixth-seeded Salem. Sullivan defeated seventh-seeded Owensville, 51-37. Salem knocked off third-seeded Cuba, 79-67.

Justin Biermann scored 14 points to lead Sullivan (10-1).

The tournament concludes Saturday with the seventh-place contest at 2:30 p.m., the consolation game at 4 p.m., the third-place contest at 5:30 p.m. and the championship game at 7 p.m.

“I’m just glad we’re playing again after three weeks,” VanLeer said. “Linn has a good team. If we come ready to play, we should be fine.”

The Indians held leads over Steelville of 33-10 after one quarter, 45-15 at halftime and 65-27 after three quarters. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock.

Cullen VanLeer led Pacific in the scoring column with 19 points.

Tanner Brown finished the game with 15 points.

Jeffrey Hinkle collected nine points.

Logan Armstrong, Tristan Moore and Stephen Johnson each scored six points.

Noah Boyer and Jacob Klenke both had five points. Chris Klenke added four points.

“We shot the ball well and turned them over to get some other chances,” VanLeer said. “We didn’t play as well defensively as I would have liked. Our communication wasn’t good and we were out of position at times. They hit seven three-pointers, four of them by one kid who we didn’t guard very well. We have to do a better job defending the three-point line.”
