Meeting for the third time this season, fourth-seeded Pacific took the rubber game over fifth-seeded St. Clair with a 4-0 victory in the opening round of the Class 2 District 9 Girls Soccer Tournament last Saturday at Borgia.

The Lady Indians lost to top-seeded Union Monday in the semifinals, 9-1.

Pacific (7-13) held a 1-0 halftime lead over St. Clair and put the game away with three goals over the final 40 minutes.

“We played much better in the second half when we settled into our game,” said Pacific Head Coach Sarah Schultz. “The girls worked hard and relied on their teammates to make things happen. We’ve learned to take advantage of other teams’ mistakes.”

St. Clair (9-15-2) never got going on the offensive end of the field.

“We played OK in the first half. When they got their second goal, it took the air out of us a little,” said St. Clair Head Coach Ted Koenigsfeld. “We had trouble doing what we thought we could do. Our game plan was to have a strong offensive attack. They just stood us up.We couldn’t move forward with the ball.”

Cheyenne Jennings scored two goals for Pacific.

Hunter Kelemen finished with one goal and one assist.

Morgan Webb also netted a goal.

Catherine Hayden and Kate Cookson both added one assist.

Sydney Drysdale registered the shutout in goal for the Lady Indians.

“Amber Zurliene continued to guide us in the center mid position,” Schultz said. “Micaela Ort and Tessa Tomnitz worked hard at learning new positions.”

Sam Deason was in goal for St. Clair.

“We were against the wind in the second half, which made it difficult to come back,” Koenigsfeld said. “We just didn’t play well enough to win.”

St. Clair’s two seniors were Nicole Nardi and Veronica Guerra, both of whom will play soccer at Hannibal-LaGrange University.

“We won nine games this season, which is a good place to be,” Koenigsfeld said. “We have an opportunity to be better next year and the year after with the girls we have coming through the program.”

The girls need to continue to work hard.”

Pacific’s three seniors were Emiley Frazier, Caili Phillips and Morgan Webb.

“All of the seniors will be greatly missed,” Schultz said. “Emiley worked hard keeping our defense strong. Caili played tough in a new position up top. Morgan led our team offensively.”
