Involved in a pair of tight volleyball matches, Washington escaped with a 1-1 record during the week.

The Lady Jays (1-2, 1-0) lost their home opener Tuesday to Francis Howell Central 25-23, 25-20, but came back Thursday to win their GAC Central opener at Ft. Zumwalt East, 23-25, 25-17, 26-24.

Washington trailed 24-21 in the third game at FZE, but rallied back for the win.

“It took a side out attack from Jenna Barnhart and then her serving tough to get us tied up and coming through with the win,” said Washington Head Coach Kym Blankenship. “The games had long rallies with great defensive plays and strong plays at the net. It was a very exciting game to coach and watch.”

Washington had a solid attack in the match.

“Jenna was unstoppable on the front row and made key plays when it counted. Kara Herron had a great match and so did Olivia Strode, who never came out of the game. Paige Carpenter ended up setting a 5-1 in the third game and did a really nice job with ball distribution. Erica Diener turned it up and got to some really tough balls.”

Washington ended on the short end of two close games against Francis Howell Central (1-1).

“We had four serving errors in the first game and lost by two points, and six serving errors in the second game and lost by five points,” Blankenship said. “In two tight games, we got side outs and then missed serves. The little things added up in big ways. We didn’t execute the little things.”

Jenna Barnhart finished the match with five kills and two block assists for Washington.

Kara Herron added four kills and two block assists.

Erica Diener collected 12 digs and two assists.

Emily Voss registered five digs and five assists.

Paige Carpenter finished with nine assists and one dig.

Kelly Gauzy and Rachel Meyer both had three digs.

Washington plays Saturday at the Borgia Tournament.

“I’m excited that it’s a home tournament. It’s good for the girls to have more family there to support us,” Blankenship said. “It will be good to see some different teams. Hopefully we can work out a couple of kinks so we can have a stronger showing in the tournament and come out of our pool at least first or second.”
