Scoring two goals less than a minute apart proved to be enough for the Borgia soccer Lady Knights Monday.

Second-seeded Borgia (6-10) netted a 2-0 win over third-seeded Sullivan in the Class 2 District 9 semifinals Monday at Borgia.

“Getting those first two goals gave us a luxury,” said Borgia Head Coach Grant Kang. “We could sag back and defend more and force them to try to equalize. It really put a lot more pressure on them to finish.”

Kang said it was good to win the semifinal game.

“It’s a relief to be able to get the first district win,” Kang said. “Teams always are nervous playing their first district game.”

Borgia will face top-seeded Union Wednesday at 6 p.m. for the championship.

“We just have to play our best,” Kang said. “We have to let the wins and losses fall where they may. We know we have to bring our best performance. For us to have a chance to get by a team as fine as Union, we will have to be playing our very best to even have that chance. They’re a great team. They were very dominant today (in a 9-1 win over Pacific).”

Union beat Borgia early in the season, 6-0.

Borgia’s scoring surge came in the ninth and 10th minutes of Monday’s semifinal game.

Just 8:57 into the contest, Borgia junior Janie Arand put a high shot off of Sullivan senior goalie Kelsey Hedges’ hands for the first marker.

The goal was created when sophomore Allie Wilson fought down the left side and was able to cross the ball to Arand for the tally.

Just 42 seconds later, the Lady Knights surged forward and Wilson again set up the goal. This time, she passed to junior Emily Grahl, who put the ball off the left post and into the net.

The trio of Wilson, Arand and Grahl contributed quite a bit of energy to Borgia’s attack and those two goals proved to be the difference in the game.

“They really covered a lot of ground today,” Kang said. “They made a lot of runs. Their work rate was very high today. I think that ended up making a huge difference in the game.”

Sullivan had chances in the first half as well. Sophomore Skyler Evans put a ball into the side of the net after Borgia senior goalkeeper Emily Sisco was caught out of the goal.

Sullivan pushed to get back into the game in the second half and that gave Borgia several chances to hit back on the counter.

Borgia was able to create a number of chances in the second half by finding forwards moving through the defense. Many times, Sullivan’s defense was able to get back and make a challenge in time to stop the threat.

“We took advantage,” Kang said. “We had some speed available and they didn’t have many good choices because they had to press forward. That made our counterattacks more dangerous.”

But when that failed, Hedges came up huge.

Grahl was brought down in the box with just under 16 minutes left in the game and awarded a penalty kick. Her shot went on the ground to the left, but Hedges guessed right, pushed the ball off the post and then smothered the rebound.
