While the new all-weather track has not been put down at Stierberger Stadium yet, that didn’t prevent the Union Wildcats from turning their football game Friday night into a track meet with the Borgia Knights with a 60-21 victory.

Union (1-1) sizzled the new artificial turf surface for 28 points in the first half and outran the Knights (1-1) to lead 35-14 at the intermission.

Borgia had no answer for Union’s Logan Bellamy, who caught three touchdown passes of over 50 yards and ran for another score.

The Knights also struggled to put pressure on Union quarterback Blake Hulsey, who threw for five touchdowns and ran for another.

Borgia was able to maintain the pace early, until a fumble ended up in the hands of Union’s Joe Lasky at the Borgia 17, setting up the score which turned things around for the Wildcats, 28-17.

That wasn’t the only costly Borgia turnover. The Knights also fumbled just 1:18 into the game, setting up a 24-yard touchdown pass from Blake Hulsey to Jacob Carman on Union’s first play from scrimmage. The score, with 10:36 to play in the quarter, was followed by Ryan Schumaker’s kick and Union held a 7-0 lead.

Borgia moved right down the field and tied it on a 27-yard pass from Justin Baylard to Drake Raftery with 8:57 left in the quarter. Jake Erwin’s extra point tied it at 7-7.

Baylard got the nod for the starting quarterback spot over Raftery, and was able to engineer two Borgia scoring drives in the first quarter before Union pulled away.

Union went back on top with 7:00 left in the first quarter when Hulsey hit Jake Siddens on the left sideline for a seven-yard score. Schmuaker’s kick made it 14-7.

That was set up by a long pass from Hulsey to Logan Bellamy.

Borgia matched Union’s touchdown with one of its own. With 2:02 to play in the quarter, Baylard hit Kelan Winters for a 63-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline. Erwin’s kick tied it at 14-14.

Union went back on top on a 56-yard scoring pass from Hulsey to Bellamy with 1:07 left in the quarter. The kick failed, but the Wildcats were able to make up for that seconds later.

After Lasky recovered a fumble, Union needed one play to score again, getting into the end zone with 41.3 seconds to play on a 17-yard run by Bellamy. Hulsey ran for the two-point conversion and Union led 28-14 after one quarter.

Union scored the only touchdown of the second quarter. After another big Hulsey pass to Bellamy to move into the red zone, Hulsey ran for a one-yard score with 9:03 to play in the half. Schmaker’s kick made it 35-14, which is how the half ended.

The combination of Hulsey to Bellamy struck for another 52-yard score just 1:02 into the third quarter. Schumaker’s kick made it 42-14.

The Wildcats got another score on a 15-yard run by John Prosser with 6:22 left in the third. The extra-point kick scraped the front of the crossbar and fell no good. Union led, 48-14.

Union established a running clock on a 56-yard touchdown pass from Hulsey to Bellamy with 1:38 to play in the quarter. The two-point conversion failed and Union led 54-14.

Borgia stopped the running clock with 7:30 left in the game. Bret Snider scored on a two-yard run as the reserves saw plenty of playing time. Erwin’s kick made it 54-21.

Union got the final score with 2:46 to play. Drew Reed recovered a fumble at the Borgia four and then scored on the next play. The extra-point kick failed and it ended at 60-21.

Union opens Four Rivers Conference play at Sullivan next Friday while Borgia hosts Duchesne for homecoming. Kickoff at both places is set for 7 p.m.
