Union 43, St. James 6

ST. JAMES — Despite making a number of mistakes, the Union Wildcats still managed to overcome the St. James Tigers Friday night in Phelps County, 43-6.

Union (6-2) was able to overcome turnovers and conditions to defeat the Tigers (3-5) in the Four Rivers Conference game.

Not only did the Wildcats have to overcome St. James, but both teams had to overcome the elements. It was one of the first games the Wildcats have played on grass this season and the first game with cold temperatures as well.

And a cold rain started in the first quarter, picking up around halftime.

Union took the opening kickoff, but found itself on defense early after Cameron Orlando intercepted a Blake Hulsey pass and returned it to the Union 31.

Union managed to  hold on that possession, but struggled to make ground.

The Tigers actually controlled the early play before Union scored.

The Wildcats finally broke through on the scoreboard on a five-yard pass from Hulsey to Logan Bellamy with 2:37 left in the opening quarter. Ryan Schumaker’s kick made it 7-0.

The second quarter belonged to the Wildcats. Union scored 22 points in the second quarter and had another potential score knocked out on a fumble at the goal line.

Jacob Carman scored Union’s first touchdown of the second quarter on a two-yard pass from Hulsey with 9:26 left in the half. Schumaker’s kick was no good as it scraped off the top of the left upright.

After a Casey Peth interception, John Prosser followed with a 13-yard run and then carried for the two-point conversion to make it 21- with 6:36 left in the half.

Hulsey took advantage of key blocking from his line to give Union its next score. He scrambled around before finding Bellamy open  in the middle of the field. Bellamy came back for the ball and completed the 46-yard touchdown with 3:19 to play in the half. The pair connected again for the two-point conversion.

The half ended with Union leading, 29-0.

The rain made a huge difference in the second quarter as footing became even more slippery and mud started to show.

Union continued to find ways to score Hulsey hit Jake Siddens for a five-yard touchdown pass with 7:46 left in the third quarter. Schumaker’s kick made it 36-0.

Hulsey and Carman connected for a 36-yard touchdown with 1:28 left in the third quarter and Schumaker’s kick made it 43-0.

The wet ball made a difference as Union’s punter had trouble with the snap with just over a minute to play. Derek Hale of St. James scooped up the loose ball and ran 47 yards for a touchdown with 1:09 to play. The extra-point kick failed and the game ended with Union winning, 43-6.
