Scott Suggs will spend part of his summer in Las Vegas.

But it will be a business trip for Suggs, who will play in the NBA Summer League for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Suggs, a 2008 graduate of Washington High School, was contacted by the Bucks last Friday, the day following the NBA Draft, who gave him a spot on their summer team.

“It’s a great opportunity for me. I’m excited about what’s in store,” Suggs said. “I leave July 9 for camp in Milwaukee and then we head to Las Vegas from there.”

The NBA Summer League will feature 22 teams competing in a 61-game schedule from July 12-22 at the Thomas & Mack Center and COX Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

This summer’s event will feature the debut of a tournament style schedule that will crown the first ever NBA Summer League Champion on Monday, July 22.

NBA TV will televise a full slate of NBA Summer League games.

Milwaukee’s first summer game is scheduled for Saturday, July 13, against the Denver Nuggets.

“Everyone is guaranteed five games. And then there’s a round-robin for the playoffs, which leads to the championship,” Suggs said.

Suggs worked out for the Bucks last week over a two-day period prior to the NBA Draft.

“Scott had a private meeting with the Bucks GM (general manager) after his workout. They really like him,” said Cassandra Suggs, Scott’s mother. “He’s not married to the Bucks. He’s still a free agent. The summer league is an opportunity for Scott not only to make the Bucks, but it allows other teams to look at him as well. If another team likes him, they can sign him. We’re really excited about it.”

Working out for the Bucks was quite an experience for Suggs.

“Originally, I was supposed to work out for them just on Monday. They liked what they saw from me, so they brought me back Tuesday,” Suggs said. “I was a little nervous at first. Once I got into it and just starting playing basketball, it went really well.”

Suggs, a 6-6 guard, will continue to work on his overall game.

“I’ll play either the two or three spot in the summer league. My natural position is the two guard,” he said. “I’m going to work every day on my game. I need to work on my shooting, ball-handling, strength, quickness and defense.”

While Suggs was not selected by a team during the NBA Draft, the summer league provides a chance for him to make an impression.

“We prayed about it as a family. This is what God has given us,” Cassandra Suggs said.

“I thought there was a chance I’d be drafted, but it didn’t happen,” Suggs said. “I know the Bucks like me. I’m excited to show them more of what I can do.”

Suggs recently completed his playing career at the University of Washington.

He ended his career in seventh place all-time in school history in three-point shooting percentage (.401), sixth in free-throw percentage (.821) and sixth all-time with 144 three-pointers made.

As a junior, he led the Huskies and was third in the Pac-10 Conference in three-point field goal percentage (45 percent).

“It was a good experience. I played with a lot of great players,” Suggs said of his college career. “We won a lot of games. I’m proud of the success we had.”

As a senior at Washington High School, Suggs was given the Mr. Show-Me Basketball award as the state’s top player. He averaged 22.5 points per game in leading the Blue Jays to a 20-5 record and a trip the Class 5 sectional round.
