Area Grapplers Win Two Titles, 11 Medals

It was a tournament to remember for area wrestling fans.

A total of 11 area wrestlers from six different schools earned medals at the MSHSAA Wrestling Championships which concluded Saturday in Mizzou Arena in Columbia.

The medal haul included two state champions, five third-place finishers, two fifth-place finishers and one sixth-place medalist.

The state champions were:

• Pacific junior Austin Repp at 170 pounds in Class 3; and

• Warrenton senior JJ Filipek at 182 pounds in Class 3.

Finishing third were:

• Washington junior Cole Hamai at 138 pounds in Class 3;

• Washington senior Spencer Baird at 152 pounds in Class 3;

• Union junior Dalton Kuenzel at 160 pounds in Class 3;

• Washington junior Kyle Summers at 170 pounds in Class 3; and

• Owensville junior Alton Harrell at 195 pounds in Class 2.

Placing fifth were:

• Warrenton senior Ryan Sherry at 120 pounds in Class 3;

• Pacific junior Jeff Miller at 138 pounds in Class 3; and

• St. Clair senior Matt Gordon at 195 pounds in Class 2.

The area’s sixth-place finisher was:

• Washington senior Caleb Summers at 160 pounds in Class 3.

In the team standings, Washington was the top area finisher. The Blue Jays scored 79.5 points to finish sixth in Class 3.

Kearney and Neosho tied for the state title with 152 points while Staley was third at 117, Warrensburg ended fourth at 91.5 and Platte County was fifth at 84 points.

Pacific was 14th with 41.5 points while Warrenton took 15th with 40 points. Union scored 35 points to tie for 17th with Winnetonka.

Owensville was the top area school in Class 2, scoring 23 points to tie for 23rd.

St. Clair was next with 12 points to end 32nd.

Sullivan and St. James tied for 38th with four points apiece.

Oak Grove won the Class 2 title with 172 points. Fulton was second at 113, Odessa took third at 103 and Cameron was fourth with 102.5 points.

In Class 4, Park Hill won the title with 156.5 points and Blue Springs took second at 124.5.

The next two finishers were from the Wentzville district as Timberland took third at 96 and Holt was fourth at 88.5.

Whitfield won the Class 1 title with 126 points. Brookfield placed second at 109.5 points. Seneca (96) and Plattsburg (93) rounded out the trophy winners.
