OWENSVILLE — Capitalizing on errors in the second half, the Borgia football Knights rolled to a 26-6 win Friday in Owensville.
After a scoreless first half, it seemed like neither team was going to put points on the board.
Both teams struggled in the first half, and gave up scoring opportunities with fumbles and a blocked field goal attempt, but the Knights capitalized on Dutchmen errors in the second half to win 26-6.
The Knights were finally able to get on the board with less than 10 minutes left in the third quarter. Junior quarterback Drake Raftery put Borgia up 6-0 with a 65-yard touchdown run. Senior kicker Jacob Erwin missed the extra point attempt.
After Owensville was forced to punt, the Knights marched down the field, finishing with a 10-yard run by Raftery to increase the lead to 12-0 with 5:02 to go in the third quarter. Borgia attempted the 2-point conversion, but was unsuccessful.
The Dutchmen struggled to move the ball down the field, and with third down and 13 yards to go decided to punt the ball. Borgia senior defensive lineman Brendan Joyce blocked the punt and returned it for a touchdown. Erwin’s extra point put the Knights up 19-0 with 3:26 left in the third quarter.
Late in the game Owensville finally was able to cut into Borgia’s lead. Junior linebacker Dalton Chapman recovered a fumble by Borgia at the 1-yard line and returned it to make the score 19-6 with 2:15 to play.
In the final seconds, Borgia sophomore defensive back Kelan Winters intercepted a Dutchmen pass and returned it 28 yards for the final score of the game with 5.3 seconds left.
Borgia heads to Union (0-1) next week. Union lost to Poplar Bluff Friday, 31-14.
It was the 13th consecutive loss for the Dutchmen, who opened a new turf stadium against the Knights.
