It was a mixed start to the 2013 portion of the schedule for the Borgia basketball Knights.

Borgia (6-5, 3-1) won an Archdiocesan Athletic Association game at St. Mary’s (7-4, 1-1) Friday night, 58-38.

But the Knights fell Saturday afternoon to Chaminade (6-6) in the Cardinal Ritter Shootout, 50-39.

“We really played well against St. Mary’s and Chaminade,” Borgia Head Coach Dave Neier said. “The thing about the Chaminade game was that they played well, too.”

St. Mary’s

The Knights came out on fire Friday night at St. Mary’s jumping out to an 18-9 lead after one quarter. Borgia was up 34-15 at the intermission.

“We were able to get steals and easy baskets,” Neier said. “Once we got the lead, we played well.”

Borgia put the game out of reach with a 16-12 third quarter to take a 50-27 advantage into the final eight minutes of action.

“We came out and shot the ball well,” Neier said. “What a difference that makes. We were able to get a lead on them to start.”

Jordan Miller led the Knights with 22 points while hitting four three-point baskets. Miller added six assists, four rebounds and two steals.

“Jordan had a really good game and got hot from the three-point line,” Neier said.

He also had all of Borgia’s made free throws, going 4-6. The Knights only attempted seven free throws in the game.

Casey Kuchem recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. He added an assist, a blocked shot and a steal.

“Case was hot and hit three threes at the beginning of the game,” Neier said. “He showed a lot of energy and played good defense.”

John Baumstark checked in with seven points. He added five rebounds, three assists and a steal.

“John hit a big three at the end of the first quarter which seemed to energize the team,” Neier said.

Joe Helfrich scored six points with three rebounds and two assists.

Zach Schweissguth ended with four points, three rebounds and an assist.

River Filla scored two points with one rebound and one steal.

Adam Meyer ended with two points, an assist and a rebound.

Also playing were Kevin Birk (one rebound), Tyler Breckenkamp, Parker DuMontier, Collin Mantle (one rebound) and Alex Moss (one rebound and one steal).

“It was a great team effort,” Neier said. “The kids hustled and played tough. Offensively, all of the kids chipped in.”

St. Mary’s was paced by Josh Robinson, who scored 11 points with six rebounds and two assists.

Luke Yelenick scored six points while James Wiggins ended with five.

Matt Causino and Melvin Wilson contributed four points apiece. Zach Ortinau and Jared Pudlowski scored three points apiece. Jake DeWeese ended with two points.

Chaminade

Borgia turned around and played Saturday in the Cardinal Ritter Shootout against Chaminade. The Knights trailed much of the way, falling 50-39.

“We really didn’t shoot as well against Chaminade,” Neier said. “Part of it was because of their defense. They have long, tall players.”

Chaminade outscored the Knights in the first quarter, 10-6. At the half, it was 27-21 in favor of the Red Devils.

After three quarters, Chaminade enjoyed a 42-32 advantage.

Baumstark, Kuchem and Schweissguth were the only scorers for Borgia, netting 13 points apiece.

“That really is weird,” Neier said. “We didn’t shoot the ball that well and we played against a good Chaminade team. They played tough with great size and mobility. They got after it.”

Baumstark added three rebounds, one assist and one steal.

“John shot the ball well,” said Neier.

Kuchem had four rebounds, three assists, one blocked shot and one steal.

Schweissguth posted four assists, four steals and one rebound.

“Zach really had a nice ballgame,” Neier said.

Miller didn’t score, but had six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Miller tried to play through a rib injury he picked up against St. Mary’s.

“Jordan got hurt the night before,” Neier said. “He might have to miss our next game.”

Filla recorded one assist and one rebound. Helfrich had two rebounds and an assist. Meyer ended with two rebounds and a blocked shot. Moss also played.

Grant Hollander led a balanced Chaminade offense with 10 points.

Andy Kleinlein netted seven points.

Six-point scorers for Chaminade were Trey Collins, Will Gladson, Jack Hummel and Jayson Tatum.

Damon Patterson scored five points while Tyler Cook ended with four.
