With a pair of convincing girls basketball victories, Washington pushed its winning streak to three games.

The Lady Jays (3-2, 1-0) notched home wins Tuesday over Ft. Zumwalt East 60-29 and Thursday over Warrenton, 66-44.

Ft. Zumwalt East

Playing its first-ever GAC Central contest, Washington held the lead throughout the game against Ft. Zumwalt East (2-5, 0-1).

The Lady Jays increased their advantage all night, leading 13-7 after one quarter, 31-17 at halftime and 43-23 after three quarters.

“I was extremely proud of our girls’ effort, especially when it came to rebounding the ball. It seemed like we got every rebound there was to get in the first half,” said Washington Head Coach Adam Fischer. “We let up a little bit in the second half, but I felt our subs really came in and gave us a big boost of energy and picked our team right back up.”

Guards Paige Carpenter and Courtney Kedroski led the Lady Jays with 15 points and 13 points, respectively. Forward Rachel Kackley added 11 points.

Kaitlin Evans finished the game with nine points. Kirstie Leslie and Katie Trigg both scored four points. Alex Ready and Helena Ballmann both had two points.

“With our injuries right now, all nine of the players have been giving me excellent minutes,” Fischer said. “We are starting to shoot the ball with more confidence and expecting more of ourselves. As soon as we develop that killer instinct, we will be a tough team to play.”

Warrenton

Washington turned a six-point halftime lead into a 22-point victory in Thursday’s victory over Warrenton (2-4).

Leading 27-21 at halftime, the Lady Jays outscored the Lady Warriors 39-23 in the second half.

“This was an all-around great effort by everyone who touched the floor,” Fischer said. “This was the first game of the year that we played an entire 32-minute game with intensity and passion.”

It was another balanced scoring attack for the Lady Jays, who were led by Carpenter’s 16 points.

Kedroski finished the game with 15 points. Kackley added 14 points.

Evans chipped in with eight points. Kirstie Leslie collected seven points. Ready scored four points. Ballmann had two points. Hannah Leslie and Trigg also saw action.

“Kirstie Leslie, Evans and Ballmann took charge of the boards all night. Rachel Kackley did not allow any shots to get off easy in the paint,” Fischer said. “My guards, Kedroski, Carpenter and Ready, controlled the pace of the game and made the shots when they were open. This was a big team win for us.”

Washington played both games without injured guards Megan Bauche and Megan Freitag.

Fischer said he expects both players to be available for next week’s Sullivan Tournament.
