MOBERLY — Controlling play Sunday afternoon, the Washington Post 218 Senior Legion forced a winner-take-all game at the Zone 1 Tournament in Moberly.

Post 218 knocked off Jefferson City Post 5, 6-2, at the Howard Hills Complex to force a final contest to determine the Zone 1 winner.

“It was a great victory and one that I will remember for a long time,” said Post 218 Manager Mike Gardner.

Washington (36-9 with the win) avenged two earlier losses to Jefferson City, including one the previous afternoon in the winners’ bracket final, with the victory.

Post 218 jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second and doubled that in the bottom of the fourth.

Jefferson City scored its two runs in the fifth, but Washington added two final runs in the seventh inning.

For Post 218, it turned into pitching by committee.

Zach Pointer got the start for Washington and lasted 3.2 innings before giving way. He allowed three hits, five walks and one hit batter while striking out one.

Andrew Sumner escaped a fourth-inning jam and earned the win. Sumner went 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out two.

Tyler Tuepker sealed the victory with four innings of scoreless pitching. He was credited with a save while allowing just one hit over the final four frames. He struck out two.

“Our pitchers really toughed it out and between Zach and Andrew,” Gardner said. “They were able to get us through five innings. Andrew came in with the bases loaded and was able to get a strikeout on a great change up low and away. Tyler then came and shut them down for the victory.”

Offensively, Post 218 was led by Grant Eckelkamp, who recorded three of Washington’s nine hits. Two of the hits were helped by the field. One bounced over the head of the shortstop while another rebounded off the second base bag.

Eckelkamp also drove in a run.

Tony Helfrich posted the only extra-base hit for Washington, a double. He scored and drove in a run.

Trent Leimkuehler singled, scored, drove in one, walked twice and stole a base.

Jack Kopmann singled and added a sacrifice.

Noah Borgerding singled, scored and drove in a run. He added a sacrifice fly.

Luke Hasenjaeger singled and added a sacrifice bunt.

Sam Katzung singled, scored, drove in a run and walked.

Matt Jones walked, was hit by a pitch and scored.

Dilan Bollmann scored a run.

On the other side, Garrett Haslag started for Post 5 and lasted five innings. He allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks with four wild pitches.

Levi Rose pitched the last three innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit, one walk and one hit batter. He struck out one.

Offensively, Cole Distler led Post 5 with two hits.

The other hits came from Connor Hager, Patrick Schnieders, Daniel Castillo (double), Logan Bax (triple) and Corey Beard.

Dietler and Schnieders scored the runs. Logan Bax recorded both RBIs with his triple.

Beard also was hit by a pitch.

Scoring

Borgerding led off the second inning with a single and Hasenjaeger bunted him to second.

A double by Helfrich plated the first run. Helfrich went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a hit by Katzung.

In the fourth, Katzung started the rally with a one-out walk. He took second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Eckelkamp.

Eckelkamp was put out on a fielder’s choice on a ball hit by Bollmann.

Bollmann followed by taking second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Leimkuehler.

In the top of the fifth, Distler and Schnieders led off with back-to-back singles.

After an infield fly, Sumner struck out Castillo looking. Bax continued the inning with a triple to the center field fence, bringing in two. But Sumner got a flyout to escape the mess, 4-2.

In the seventh, Leimkuehler walked and pushed to second when Jones was hit by a pitch. Kopmann put down a bunt and reached on an error. Leimkuehler scored on that play and Jones moved to third.

Borgerding hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Jones with the sixth run.

In the final two innings, Castillo led off the eighth with a double to left field, but that was it. Jefferson City went down in order. Leimkuehler squeezed his glove shut on a flyout to center to give Post 218 the victory, a force a winner-take-all game.
