Pacific’s run in the Zone 1 Junior Legion Tournament came to an end with a heartbreaking loss Friday night.

Post 320 (29-7) suffered a 3-2 loss to Jefferson City Post 5 in the losers’ bracket final at Ronsick Field in Washington.

Pacific had a 2-2 record in the Zone 1 Tournament, losing both of its games to Jefferson City, 6-1 and 3-2, and knocking off Chillicothe 12-3 and Hannibal 14-8 in eight innings.

“Overall, we played pretty well in the tournament. We just didn’t execute in our first game against Jefferson City,” said Pacific Manager Cory Cowsert. “It was a great season. The boys gave me everything I could have asked for. We’ll move up to the Senior level next year and add a few more guys. I’m also putting a team together to play in the fall to give guys more playing time.”

Washington Post 218 won the zone crown with a 5-4 victory over Jefferson City on Sunday, going 3-0 in the tournament and advancing to the state tournament this week in Joplin.

Chillicothe

Pacific rebounded from its first-round loss to Jefferson City with a 12-3 win over Chillicothe.

“It was good to play well and get that win over Chillicothe,” Cowsert said. “I think that got the guys going and gave them some momentum.”

After Chillicothe took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Post 320 responded with one run in the bottom of the first inning, five in the third, two in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Chillicothe scored its other two runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Noah Brocato got the start on the mound for Pacific and earned the win.

In four plus innings, Brocato allowed three runs on four hits with four walks and no strikeouts.

Allen Fitzgerald tossed three scoreless innings in relief. He allowed five hits and registered one strikeout.

Post 320 had 13 hits in the contest.

Alex Rice and Tyler Straatmann both finished with three hits. Straatmann added two RBIs and two runs. Rice had two RBIs and one run.

Ryan Vogelgesang collected two hits, two runs and one RBI.

Brendan McMillan registered one hit, one walk, reached on an error and scored three runs.

Ryan Howell had one hit, was hit by a pitch, reached on a fielder’s choice, and scored two runs and had one RBI.

Brocato added one hit, one walk and one run.

Drew Fonner had one hit and was hit by a pitch.

Bailey Watson had a double and two RBIs.

Fitzgerald was hit by a pitch and scored a run.

Hannibal

Pacific exploded for seven runs in the top of the eighth inning, turning a 7-7 tie into a 14-7 lead Saturday over Hannibal.

Post 320 held on for a 14-8 victory.

Austin Muich got the start on the mound for Post 320. After cruising through the first two innings, his day ended after allowing five runs in the bottom of the third.

In three innings, he allowed five runs on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

Fitzgerald tossed the next three plus innings in relief. He allowed two runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Howell pitched the final two frames to earn the win. He allowed one run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Pacific picked up 17 hits against Hannibal.

“We hit the ball really well against Chillicothe and Hannibal,” Cowsert said. “That was nice to see.”

Tyler Gerling had a big game. Offensively, he reached base three times with two hits and reached on an error. He also stole home, which highlighted the seven-run eighth inning.

Defensively at second base, Gerling saved the game in the bottom of the seventh with a diving stop up the middle on a ground ball, which prevented the runner to score from second base.

Post 320 got out of the inning with no damage done.

Straatmann and Fitzgerald both collected three hits. Straatmann added a walk, two runs and one RBI. Fitzgerald had one RBI and one run.

Fonner reached base five times with two hits and three walks. He scored three runs and had one RBI.

Vogelgesang was on base four times with two hits, one walk and was hit by a pitch. He added three RBIs and one run. His two-run single in the top of the eighth broke a 7-7 tie.

McMillan finished with two hits, a walk and two runs.

Howell added one hit (double), one walk, reached on an error, two runs and one RBI.

Rice registered one hit, one walk, one RBI and one run.

Brocato had one hit and was hit by a pitch, to go with two RBIs and one run.

Ryan Ray was hit by a pitch.

Jefferson City

Jefferson City broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to eliminate Pacific Saturday night.

Straatmann pitched the entire game for Post 320. He allowed three runs in 6.1 innings.

“We wanted to get to the championship game and they were going to have to beat our best, which they did,” Cowsert said. “It was a well-played game and a tough one to lose. I’m proud of the way we competed.”

Offensively, Cowsert said Post 320 was led by Straatmann, Fonner, Vogelgesang and Gerling.

“Straatmann had a couple of hits and Fonner and Gerling were on base almost every time. Vogelgesang hit the ball well and was solid behind the plate all year,” Cowsert said. “We pitched pretty well throughout the whole tournament.”
