Sullivan firemen was called to 57 Modern St. with the report of visible flames in the upper level of the residence. When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was coming out of the windows on the second floor.

Flesher said the property is a house that had been converted into three apartments. The resident that lived on the upper floor lit newspapers on fire inside of a can in an attempted to smoke rodents out from under the roof, but accidentally caught the structure on fire.

According to Flesher, fire damage was confined to the top apartment only, with some water damage on the lower level.

There were no injuries and two dogs in the bottom apartment were unharmed.

St. Clair firemen also responded to the incident.
