Olivia Ritter, a senior at St. Francis Borgia Regional High School, submitted this letter to the editor.

"Life is what you make of it, so don't let it pass you by too quickly." It is words of wisdom and advice such as this that I hear nearly every time I see my friends who live at a retirement home.

This past summer I decided it was time to get a job. I pondered the possibilities while skimming through the newspaper. A picture of a group of elderly people celebrating someone's birthday jumped out at me.

I still don't quite understand what exactly it was that triggered my interest, but I immediately sprinted to my car and drove straight to The Homestead at Hickory View reitrement home to apply.

The lady at the front desk wore a comforting smile as she handed me the paperwork. I filled out the application without hesitation and returned it to the nice lady who informed me that they would contact me if I were to get the job.

So, with my fingers crossed, I walked out the door and headed back for home.

A few days had passed, and I was hopeful that I would be getting a call soon. However, as days turned into weeks, my hope began to fade.

Much to my surprise, three weeks after turning in my application, the phone rang violently. As I looked at the caller ID, I gasped for air. It read, "The Homestead."

Excitement took over me as I lifted the phone to my ear and answered, "Hello." A soothing voice spoke into my ear. I about dropped the phone when the woman said, "The Homestead would love to have you as a waitress!" I was ecstatic!

My first day at The Homestead is a day that I will never forget. As soon as I walked through the door, I was greeted by many friendly faces. I introduced myself not knowing that I would have to reintroduce myself over and over again.

Little did I know that I wouldn't just be serving the residents their meals, but I would soon learn all of their names and nearly everything about them.

The residents at The Homestead have a wide variety of personalities. You have the typical practical jokester, the sweet married couples, as well as the ones who never fail to put a smile on my face.

Each and every one of the residents has impacted my life in some way or other and I am so fortunate that I got the chance to meet them.

While it took about a week to learn their names, it only took a matter of seconds to become their friend. It means the world to them when they have someone to talk to, and in return, I receive an indescribable feeling because I'm making them happy just by being there.

The Homestead has truly been an awesome experience and I feel incredibly blessed to be a part of The Homestead family.

Over the past four months that I have been there, I have not only made new friends, but have learned many things from the wonderful people who reside there.

They have taught me priceless life lessons and most importantly, "Life is what you make of it, so don't let it pass you by too quickly."
