St. Clair Jaycees Running Low on Active Members

The St. Clair Jaycees club is looking for some new members who are ready to take the plunge into community service.

According to Jaycees Vice President Angela Getman, the club currently has a somewhat healthy base of 21 paying members, but she said many of them aren't always active in Jaycees activities.

"The same members are active in all of our events all the time," she said. "We have 21 members on paper, but that's just because they pay the yearly fee, they don't necessarily help out. We really need to get some people to participate."

The St. Clair Jaycees are extremely active in the community, organizing events geared at raising money for causes locally and nationally.

Annually, the club spearheads such events as trivia night, a poker run float trip, the wacky bowl, the chili cook-off and fun with Santa.

The club also helps sponsor events like Relay for Life and Boo Bash.

"I know 21 members doesn't sound that bad, but a lot of them aren't very active," Getman said. "We'd like to have at least 15 active members. That way we all don't have to work the same events and we can each experience the events and have fun at them rather than having them almost feel like a burden because the same people are doing every event and putting all the work into it."

Getman said the Jaycees is great for any young adult in the community looking to make connections and improve important life skills.

"They provide the tools that a person would need to build bridges to success," she said. "It improves skill in business development, management skills, individual training and community service."

Members consist of ages 18 to 41 and the club meets every third Thursday of the month.

"We absolutely love it and that's why we want to recruit more members so more people can experience the organization," Getman said.

As a two-year member of the Jaycees, Getman said that activities have improved her in many ways.

"On a personal level, I think that's it's helped me improve my self-esteem and I feel a lot more comfortable speaking in front of people," she said. "My leadership skills have also improved dramatically."

Along with looking good on a resume, being a member also allows for training in organizing and managing fundraisers as well as communicating with local businesses to help others.

Additionally, the club meets with other units across the country, leaving many opportunities for professional and personal networking.

"We all do the same exact thing for the same exact reasons and that's helping our community," Getman said.
