A 3-year-old girl has died after she was struck in the head by a stray bullet from her neighbor's gun Monday afternoon.

The girl was walking with two others at a residence on Highway EE south of Owensville when the girl collapsed, said Gasconade County Sheriff Randy Esphorst.

Although the sheriff's department did not release her name, she was identified as Allison Schneider of Owensville in a story carried by the Associated Press.

Allison was flown by air ambulance to St. John's Mercy Medical Center, Creve Coeur died at St. Louis Children's Hospital.

The hospital confirmed Tuesday that Allison died at 2:34 p.m.

Gasconade County deputies and Owensville ambulance were dispatched at 12:20 p.m., Esphorst said. Ambulance crews administered first aid at the scene.

A man who lives near the residence was shooting a 9 mm handgun at a target on his property. The target was about 365 yards away, through a bushy area, in line of site of where Allison was shot, authorities said.

The two witnesses who were with the girl took cover in a silo and were not injured. They were walking with the victim from a home to a fenced area to look at livestock when the shooting occurred.

Oh my
I would like to send my sincere apologies to the family of this young girl, and to the neighbor, who will have to live with this bizarre accident for the rest of their life. Its just so unbelievable! =-(
