The Franklin County Narcotics Enforcement Unit will host its fourth special collection event for unwanted prescription medications. The event will take place at the St. Clair home football game (versus Union) on Thursday, Oct. 29, in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week. Those participating will be allowed free admission to the game.

The aim of the Prescription Medication Take-Back Program is to get prescription medications, specifically controlled substances, out of reach of teens, off the streets, and out of the water supplies.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (www.samhsa.gov), over 3 million U.S. teens, ages 12-17, abuse prescription drugs. Every day, 3,300 more children begin experimenting with prescription drugs and 70 percent of children who abuse prescription drugs admit to getting them from family or friends.

Red Ribbon Week is the nation's oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation, reaching millions of Americans during the last week of October every year. By wearing red ribbons and participating in community and anti-drug events, young people pledge to live a drug-free life and pay tribute to DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs to keep our country and children safe.

Three other events were held at local home football games including Washington, Sullivan and Union. Citizens may participate in this collection event at St. Clair High School on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Participants must be 18 years old and have proper identification. A registration table will be set up and participants will be asked for identification to verify age and the address on the medications. No personal information will be taken other than the town of residence. Permanent marker will be used to black out identifying information. Drugs will be identified and calculated. Medication will be given to law enforcement for disposal.

Do's and Don'ts:
Bring proper identification. This is to verify that participants are 18 years of age and that they reside at the address listed on the medications.

Participants may bring in medication from anyone living within their household.

Bring medications in the original packaging from the pharmacy.

Bring in any medication from a licensed pharmacist, including controlled substances, liquids containing medications, prescription inhalers and medicated ointments or patches.

Do not bring medication from anyone who does not reside in your home.

Do not bring illicit drugs.

Items not accepted: Sharp objects or needles; radioactive medications; bio-hazardous materials; glass thermometers or other medical devices; other household waste.
