Just finishing the Borgia Invitational Cross Country Meet was an achievement for girls Saturday.

The course was sloppy, muddy and wet after heavy rains last week and four races run there Thursday. Meet workers labored Friday to try to fix the worst spots on the course.

There still were problems. At least one runner competed after losing a shoe in the muck.

The good news is that the girls ran the first two races of the day on Saturday, before the three boys races.

In the varsity meet, Jefferson City won the team title with 38 points. Ladue was second with 60 points while Ste. Genevieve took third with 79, Borgia scored 110, Helias had 118, Waynesville scored 130, John Burroughs ended with 184, School of the Osage ended with 200 and Reeds Spring had 202 points.

Sarah Jacobsen of Potosi won the individual title in 20:33. Ladue's Jocelyn Todd was next at 20:56. Potosi, which fielded only two runners, also had the third runner across the line in Sarah White in 21:10. Fourth went to Jefferson City's Briana Watson in 21:15.

Leading the local charge was Abby Glastetter of Borgia, who was fifth in 21:22.

Rounding out the top 10 were Sam Levin of Ladue (22:25), Conradette King of Jefferson City (22:33), Joni Reinkemeyer of Helias (22:35), Elise Schreiber of Jefferson City (22:46) and Sami Doran of School of the Osage (22:51).

Two other Borgia runners placed in the top 25. Shannon Piontek was 17th in 23:26. Rose Glastetter was 25th in 24:02.

Other Borgia runners were Libby Barbey (37th in 25:14), Haley Russell (47th in 26:20), Emmy Glastetter (55th in 27:13) and Abby Buchmann (61st in 28:04).

"I thought our girls ran really well," said Borgia Head Coach Kurt Russell. "Abby Glastetter is just so consistent, always in the top 10 and always being a great leader for us. Shannon Piontek keeps getting better every meet. Rose Glastetter, as I have said before, is one of the most improved athletes we've had since Joan Williams. She has been great this year. After that, we struggle a little, due to injury and sickness. Haley Russell has a stress fracture in her back and some other back issues that she is trying to run through, Libby Barbey is having troubles with her knees, Abby Buchmann has a variety of leg issues and Emmy Glastetter was sick with the flu. Those four are really trying to gut it out and I couldn't be prouder of them. We never emphasize winning, we always emphasize doing the best that you can do on a given day, and that is what this team has always done, all seven of them. If we can get healthy, we might make some noise at the district meet. But we'll be chasing some really good teams."

Sullivan ran four girls in the varsity race. Jessie Landwehr was 48th in 26:23. Britney Sartori was 56th in 27:21. Lindsay Miller ran 64th in 28:19 and Robbie Barker was 69th in 29:24.

There were 79 runners who finished the varsity race.

Jefferson City dominated the junior varsity girls race, the first of the day on the course.

The Lady Jays had the first four runners across the line and scored 19 points to breeze to the team title.

Ladue was second at 51 points while Union scored 56 and Rosati-Kain had 117 points.

Haylei Osborne of Jefferson City won the race in 23:29. Michelle McGuire was second in 23:54, Ashley Dunlap took third in 24:43 and Samantha Burton was fourth in 24:44.9.

The first runner not from Jefferson City was Caitlyn Zweifel of Union, who finished in 24:55. Union's Christa Lenau was sixth in 24:57.

Rounding out the top 10 were Sara Hahn of Ladue (25:02), Hayley Miller-Washington of Ladue (25:19), Harley Bailey of Jefferson City (25:23) and Christine Ferguson of Jefferson City (25:26).

Union had seven runners in the top 27.

Emily Vie was 14th in 26:02. Karlee Krey was 16th in 27:02. Karen Osuna ran 17th in 27:09. Abbie Vie was 27th in 29:27, Megan Lanham ran 28th in 29:36. Emily Siedhoff placed 31st in 30:06. Erin Neier was 35th in 30:47. Heidi Griffin was 55th in 41:25.

St. Clair had one finisher, Kelly Barns, who placed 32nd in 30:26.

Borgia's lone JV finisher was Emma Emke, who was 34th in 30:43.

Sullivan had one JV finisher, Lena Brueggemann. She was 46th in 32:46.

There were 56 finishers in the JV girls race.
