Courage and Grit

On Monday, Union became the second city in the United States to require a prescription to purchase pseudophedrine based medication at pharmacies. During the debate over whether to take this action, union city officials questioned why there wasn't a state law in place that would accomplish the same thing.

It's a fair question that has a simple answer at least for the cynics among us - money.

The pharmaceutical lobby doesn't want the law because it has the potential to hurt sales and profits. And they wield a lot of clout in Jefferson City. Many of those lobbyists have given handsomely to the coffers of quite a few of our lawmakers.

As we've noted before, its going to take some grit and courage for lawmakers to find the will to get a law passed even with the support of a growing coalition of law enforcement officials that includes Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster. Requiring a prescription for some cold and allergy medicines containing pseudophedrine is controversial. It is an inconvenience to many who use those drugs. That much is clear.

But we feel it's time Missouri got serious about confronting a methamphetamine epidemic that has wreaked havoc with public health and spread crime throughout our state for far too many years.

The Union Board of Alderman recognized this and found that courage and grit to deal with the problem in their city.

Good for them.

Courage and Grit? More like Cop Gone Wild.
One deranged cop is behind all this. It's not about pseudoephedrine, it's about his power to control people. All products sold containing pseudoephedrine are already tracked in a statewide database. This law is about ignorance of lawmakers and the power of one Cop Gone Wild.

I suggest we do two things to combat this ignorance. First don't use a pharmacy in Washington or Union. Second, there's no reason to keep voting in a sheriff that allows such abuse of power and can't control one of his own.

please stop it
The Union Board of Alderman has not dealt with a drug problem. Cocaine, heroin, and many other illegal drugs still exist. They have not dealt with the drug user or dealer. They have only dealt with the honest citizen.........again. They want to do this with guns, too. The chemical is not the problem. The people using and dealing the chemicals are the problem. Build more jails and in-patient treatment centers.

EXACTLY!!! Now it's time for the punishment of the many for the crimes of a few....great job!!!

Not only did they raise the price of these OTC medicines, not you could possibly have to pay your Doctor a co-pay for the "prescriptions" for something that was cheap in the beginning. Just another "Ordinance" to hurt the common working people. Great job on your lack of understanding of what the common people go through every day.
