Conditions were far from ideal for Thursday's GAC North cross country meet, but Washington made the best of the situation.

Running on a cold, wet and muddy course at Big Driver in Washington, the Lady Jays finished first in the girls team standings while the Blue Jays were second in the boys team standings.

"I was proud of the way our kids competed. I felt that we ran strong in every race," said Washington Coach Mike Olszowka. "The weather was great for cross country, but the course conditions were interesting. All of the rain we have had made the course very sloppy and very slow. Our kids ran smart and competed strongly."

The Lady Jays accumulated a team score of 47 to win the conference title.

Ft. Zumwalt East finished second with 54 points. Warrenton was third with 98 points followed by St. Charles West with 101, Duchesne with 112, Timberland with 125 and Ft. Zumwalt North with 125. St. Charles competed, but did not field a full team.

Ft. Zumwalt North claimed the boys title with 34 points. Washington finished second with 73 points.

Ft. Zumwalt East was third with 101 points followed by Timberland with 108, Warrenton with 110, St. Charles West with 117 and Duchesne with 146. St. Charles competed, but did not field a full team.

The top 14 runners in each race earned conference medals.

Varsity Girls

Leading the Lady Jays was Lauren Guasto, who finished second in a time of 22:02.

"I did all right. I wish it wasn't so hard to get through the mud," Guasto said. "This was one of the only races we've had where the course was really bad. It reminded me of districts last year. Our times were off because of it."

Megan Wood placed sixth in 22:38.

"By the time we started, we were so muddy anyway. We just didn't care. It was like let's see how much mud we can get on our body," Wood said. "I really wasn't tired. It was just a hard race. We weren't running for times. We were running for places."

Celia Venezia was seventh in 22:49.

"I ran OK. I've run better. I'm just trying to stay positive and work my way back to where I was last year," Venezia said. "It was tough out there. We knew coming in we weren't going to run our best times. We just wanted to do our best and not fall."

Also running for WHS were Madeline Marlow, 15th in 23:46, and Kasey Wood, 17th in 24:12.

"We were missing two of our top seven girls, but the remaining five stepped up to defend their crown," Olszowka said.

Warrenton's medalists were Emily Mauch, fifth in 22:29, Rachel Moritz, ninth in 22:54, and Meghan Stark, 10th in 23:01.

Ft. Zumwalt East's Gloria Westlake won the race in 21:23.

Varsity Boys

Leading the Blue Jays was Brandon Jackson, who finished fifth in 18:37. Adam Lause placed 11th in 19:26.

Joel Kliewer was 14th in 19:36.

Also running for WHS were Dylan Callaway, 16th in 19:52, and Matt Morgan, 21st in 20:24.

Ft. Zumwalt North's Jake Benton won the race in 17:31.

Warrenton's medalists were Cloud Wharton, 10th in 19:25, and Ryan Romaker, 12th in 19:30.

"We've had kids out sick for a few days who came back and fought through feeling weak to put our teams in contention for conference titles," Olszowka said. "We came up a bit short in three of the races, but we did what we had to do."

Junior Varsity

Washington finished second in both the JV boys and girls team standings.

Taylor Juergens won the boys race in 21:07. Lucas Jasper finished third in 21:19. Clayton Bunkley was 13th in 21:57.

Hannah Plowman finished fourth in the girls race in 26:22. Anna Bretzke was seventh in 27:18. Caroline Green ended 12th in 27:55.

"Thanks to Coach Russell, Mr. Eckelkamp and Mr. Dill for allowing us to host the meet on their course," Olszowka said. "Too many people think of this town as Borgia versus Washington. That is not true. Anyone who has been around Big Driver this past week or in years past when the course is being set up realizes that there are two schools in this town, but we are still one community."
