VanLeer also informed the school board this week she anticipates H1N1 vaccination clinics will be set up at some school sites.
"The details are still being firmed up," she said. "We have a number of logistical things to deal with."
A letter was going home Friday with students about the possibility of the district hosting vaccination clinics and asking parents if they would want their child to participate.
The clinics would be conducted in partnership with the Franklin County Health Department and Patients First, VanLeer said.
"We need to know what the interest would be so the health department knows how many does would be needed," she said. "Parents need to let us know by Oct. 15. If they do not receive a letter, they should contact school."
Under the new notification or call blast program, the district will have access to the SchoolReach Instant Parent Contact system to send phone broadcast alerts to parents.
"This service will only be used for messages relating to H1N1 needs, such as widespread outbreak notices, prevention guidance, vaccination clinic sites and, if needed, school closing and reopening," VanLeer said.
The SchoolReach service will transmit from the district's main caller ID with a message recorded by he superintendent or other school official.
If a live answer is detected, the message will start playing shortly after someone says hello. If an answering machine is detected, the message will record on the machine.
If a busy signal or no answer is detected, the system will make two additional delivery attempts in 15-minute increments and then cease.
The SchoolReach system allows for a four-ring answer cycle, so if an answering machine is set to answer after four rings, people may want to consider adjusting it.
VanLeer said the number to be called is the primary contact number provided by the household. The confidentiality of that contact information will be maintained under this program, she added.
The school district also has installed germicide dispensers near the entrance of every cafeteria and maintenance crews are doubling their efforts to keep the schools clean to prevent outbreaks of the virus.
